To the stars.

If Magellan's Cyclo 315 is comparable to the original Portuguese explorer, then the wireless Cyclo 505 GPS Cycling Computer is the equivalent of the spacecraft of the same name, which revolutionized propulsion and deceleration techniques in order to achieve a more controlled, regular orbital pattern. We do recognize that the 505 isn't quite on par with the Venus Radar Mapper, but it does communicate with satellites using SiRFstarIII GPS in order to plan routes, map a new course as you ride, or guide you home as part of a wandering, directionless ramble.

The Cyclo 505's pre-loaded maps include cycling-specific notations; restaurants, bike shops, and cyclist-friendly shoulders and dedicated lanes are all called-out, keeping you informed of possible coffee stops and pleasant alternatives to gravelly, debris-strewn shoulders on sketchy highways. By creating a rider profile, you can also ensure that you don't find yourself traversing punishing grades on a rest day or hitting dirt or gravel roads on your carbon rims and supple race tires. For off-road riding, it will also ensure that you spend the maximum amount of your ride navigating lines through rock gutters and root lattices instead of traffic furniture.

If you'd rather tempt the fates, the Cyclo 505's Surprise Me feature generates three prospective routes for you to choose from. Routes can be shared between Cyclo 315 and 505 units by shaking them, ensuring that everyone in your group is on the same page. Whatever the case, the Cyclo 505 will map a course that only hits the terrain, difficulty, and distance you want for a given ride.

The 505 is compatible with Di2, displaying drivetrain information as long as you're also running Shimano's D-Fly wireless transmission unit. The space-age explorer's wireless connectivity extends beyond drivetrains to ANT+ and Bluetooth smart devices — power meters, heart rate monitors, speed sensors, and the like. It also serves as a control station for many ANT+ smart trainers, but we recommend checking Magellan's exhaustive list of ANT+ compatible accessories to see if your trainer is compatible.

It's also got music controls if you pair it with an iPhone (4S or newer). Though controlling track changes and volume may appeal to some, many of us prefer to avoid mid-ride tunes. There's a safety element to this, sure, but there's also a certain magic in hearing the community awaken on pre-work outings, or the way the silence of a well-tuned drivetrain and the gentle hum of new tires foregrounds the natural setting of a canyon road — all while the 505 ticks off gains in altitude on a long, solitary climb. The symphony of cycling.

The Cyclo 505 displays all of this on a bright, 3in screen, and its large buttons make for easy operation in the saddle, even while wearing gloves. It's IPX-7 water resistance, so it's equal to full submersion under a meter of water — more than enough to handle conditions requiring the types of gloves that in turn require those healthy buttons. The unit is packaged with hardware to accommodate multiple mounting options, a USB cord, and an AC power adapter.
