Almost perfect...

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Size Bought: small

I am blown away at how light this helmet truly is! I bought a small, so its the lightest of all the different sizes they offer this product in. The padding is easily removable and washable, and is more than sufficient regarding comfort. The helmet vents and breathes incredibly well, although I can't comment on its aerodynamics, having never seen wind tunnel results with it. Unlike another reviewer, I had no problem with the buckles at the chin and ear drops staying in place or coming loose, and I ride a bit more as well (150-200 miles per week)...so I really don't know what that's all about. If I found anything to be thin and skimpy, it would be the plastic strap with the spiderlock - so far I haven't had any problems with it, but because I have to wear a small and tighten the spiderlock all the way to get the helmet to stay firm on my head, I tend to feel the plastic straps more. The spiderlock mechanism, while it works well, could work better. My other helmet is a Specialized Echelon, and not only is it more comfortable, but the spiderlock mechanism feels much more sturdy.

I've tried the X-Lite in a women's small, and while I'm not certain that it is any different than the men's small X-Lite, it sure felt like it fit my head better...so perhaps I should have gone with the women's small, but the men's small suffices. Aside from that, I can't really comment on product fit b/c I never grew up wearing hats or helmets.

Great Helmet

Very Light, You Don't realize you have it on. Comfortable straps. This is my second one. First one is over 3 years old. :)

Barely there

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

Good little light helmet, just a little wiggly. Stays in place on top of my head fine, and I know it will stay there, but in making it so light it seems its not the most sturdy or stable positioning and it does have a bit of wiggle and movement on my head. Not enough to concern me if I get in a wreck, and I don't exactly want to test it. But all in all, it is nice having a helmet light enough that the first time using it, I had to check a couple times to remember I put my helmet on.

It's like being bare-headed...

...without actually risking your noggin! Seriously, so super-lightweight and ventilated, you'll forget you're wearing it. (Until you need it, and then you'll be glad of its fit and function, as I was when I took a digger on my mountain bike recently and was able to get up and find the helmet still secure on my head.)

The "spiderlock" adjustment mechanism works like a charm - with my old helmet I was constantly fiddling with the adjustment wheel but this one just stays put. I do find the chin strap loosens up sometimes, but never so much that it's a problem.

The fit seems "rounder" than other Garneau helmets I've tried. Works well for me, but something to be aware of if you do better with more oval-shaped helmets.

Feels comfortable!

Had this helmet for 4 months, and really like it. Its lightweight, vents well to keep you cool. An its attractive too. Does what it is supposed to do,

Unanswered Question

What head shape best fits the X-Lite? ...

What head shape best fits the X-Lite? Does it favor a rounded head, or more oblong? Thanks

I had this helmet for a year and a half and was recently in a very bad crash. My hit slammed against the pavement hard. I was moving forward in a group going about 22 mph and I went down hard enough that my Zipp handlebars broke! The helmet absorbed the impact of my head and I didn't have as much as a headache.

I will be purchasing the helmet again, but not just for safety. From what I understand, the safety features are similar in most helmets sold because of federal regulation.

The helmet is incredibly light and comfortable. It's cool and the most easily adjusted helmet I've found. Super easy to adjust from no headgear to something for cold weather.

Another review suggested that it felt cheap and the buckles never held. I can say, for a fact, that mine held without issues when being slammed to the ground with enough impact that my Zipp handlebars broke.

Not perfect but solid overall

Over 1 year with this helmet. You'd be hard pressed to find a comparable helmet for the price and very low weight. I use this on race days, typically not for training. No problems with vents, straps or comfort. My one gripe is that my glasses don't slide into the forehead vents. I wear Oakley Radar Paths, and they fit perfectly on my day to day helmet (Giro Ionos). So when I wear the X-Lite and want to put up my shades, they go behind my head. Not a huge deal, but I do wish it fit the oakley earpieces better.

Louis Garneau X-Lite Helmet

In the above video it shows the side strap adjustment guides all the way down at the buckle, rather than up underneath the earlobes. I have to assume this was an error in product set-up for the video, and not the way the helmet is designed, correct? (I've worked for 2 helmet companies in the past ...)

louis garneau x lite helmet

Louis Garneau clothing etc. has always been a favorite of mine. This is why I hesitated not to purchase the x - lite helmet. 1st the positive.
It is light and breathes well. But......that is where it stops. I must say the rest is sad. The parts which secure the helmet to your valuable head are very thin and skimpy at best. The worst part is the buckles at the ear drops and at the chin. These are the worse I have encountered in any and I mean any helmet. I ride approximately 130 to 150 miles per week. I have owned many helmets. The cinch buckles on this helmet never and I mean never hole their place. My 1st stop is approx. only 10.5 miles and I must adjust and cinch the chin strap (tighten) and most of the time the ear drop buckle also. It is very frustrating to deal with the skimpy and cheap buckle system on this expensive helmet. Save your money and look for another is all that I can recommend.

Disagree fully with Martin's review. The strapping is just what can be expected from any helmet. Despite his broad experience , he seems to have had difficulty making the out- of- carton adjustments or he may be grappling with a shell that is too large.
My experience is complete satisfaction with quality of design and manufacture.

The previous comment cites the "quality of design and manufacure", but says nothing about experience. To me, it's the experience that counts, and the negative review of the helmet based on the first rider's actual experience has the ring of truth.

Should you want experience you might want to refer to the first review from Eric, who also rides quite a bit per week. I can only speak for myself, but I put in about 100 mi. per week and finished six centuries over the summer wearing the Garneau X Light helmet. It has worked perfect. It is comfortable, the straps and spiderlock have worked absolutely fine, great ventilation and it is very light. I have absolutely no complaints over the last 1500 miles.
