Description

Get dirty.

While Louis Garneau isn't known for its off-road products, when it designs something for dirt-lovers, it hits it out of the park every time. The Santos Short is no exception. Stretchy material, mesh ventilation, a removable liner, and plenty of pocket space make the Santos ideal for ripping singletrack.

For the main shell fabric, Garneau chose Dura-X. This is important because this two-way stretch fabric is composed almost entirely of abrasion-resistant nylon for bombproof durability. While Dura-X is already breathable, Garneau enhanced this breathability with open mesh panels that allow air to flow freely through the shorts. If even more ventilation, the side pockets are designed to increase airflow if left open.

The Santos comes with a removable chamois liner short. This means that the short can be worn off the bike as a stylish walkshort. Garneau also added adjustable waist tabs that allow you to dial in the fit for a comfortable, semi-custom fit. Speaking of comfort, the Santos features seamless inner legs to eliminate annoying chafing and irritation on long rides.

The Santos comes with plenty of pocket space. Two hand pockets as well as two cargo pockets provide about all the storage space that you could need for snacks, keys, music, your phone–whatever you need short of a hydration reservoir. The side pockets also double as additional ventilation in a pinch.

Santos shorts also include Louis Garneau's Airzone chamois. The Airzone chamois features Beveled Molding Edges that provide a smooth transition from pad to fabric to eliminate pinching and chafing. Not only does the Airzone feature a moisture-wicking Coolmax top sheet, but it receives an anti-bacterial treatment to control odor, and pre-molded wings to add comfort while protecting against inner-thigh chafing.

Louis Garneau's Santos Shorts are available in black. They come in sizes from Small to XX-Large.

Decent short with a few drawbacks

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I've used these moderately for about a year - average 1 ride/week. They feel great on the bike, pockets are the right kind & location, and they come out of the wash looking new. I've always worn them over bib shorts - didn't find the included liner too comfortable.

Biggest drawback is the elastic waist tabs. I'm a 32 waist and bought the medium size - I've needed to tighten these a fair amount from the beginning. The tabs secure with velcro on each side, and the velcro has degraded pretty quickly. Recently in order to keep the velcro tabs from popping loose I've used staples and duct tape. I'll likely sew some buttonholes and buttons next.
