Description

Cool breezes.

Helmet manufacturers have always told us to replace our helmets after a minor crash (even with no visible damage) or when it's more than two years old. Some may argue that it's all a marketing ploy. Then again, we'd rather not gamble on our brains. If it's time to consider a new lid, take a look at all the features of the Louis Garneau Quartz Helmet.

Garneau built the Quartz using In-Mold construction, which means the outer shell has been permanently fused to the impact-absorbing EPS foam liner. This process enhances the effectiveness of both parts. In fact, the fusion process actually reinforces those formerly vulnerable spots around the vents and ribs. It results in a lighter, more durable, and better-ventilated helmet.

The Quartz also makes use of Garneau's MSB (monocoque structural base) technology. The monocoque structural base runs along the perimeter of the helmet, which increases the overall strength and prevents the helmet from shattering on impact. MSB also enabled Garneau to add massive vents to the Quartz, 33 of them to be exact. By comparison, the Giro Atmos, another of our favorites, only has 22 vents. If you ride in hot summer temps, the Quartz is nice option.

The Quartz is mounted on a lightweight, rack-and-pinion adjustment system called Spiderlock SL, whichallows you to adjust the helmet's fit with one hand. Cinched down to even semi-snug, it will keep the helmet from moving around. Additionally, the pads are ergonomically set so the Quartz rests comfortably on your head.

Helmet padding can get really dirty and gross. The Quartz is outfitted with Sealed Airdry padding, which can be removed and washed. A removable visor with plastic plugs to fill in the attachment holes also comes standard. This is good if you'd rather not purchase a different helmet for the road and mountain bike.

The Louis Garneau Quartz helmet is available in Small, Medium, Large, and X-Large and comes in Blue, Red, White, or Europcar Team.

  • 33 mega-large, strategically-shaped vents directs cooling air over the head when riding
  • Spiderlock SL retention system comfortably and securely holds the helmet in place
  • An ultra-low weight reduces neck fatigue

Great for big heads

I love this helmet because I have a pretty huge head. It's the only high-end road helmet I've been able to find that fits. It's light, comfortable on long rides, well vented. I wear it daily to commute as well as on long rides.

Great lid!

OK. The reason I bought this helmet is because Team Europcar literally choose this helmet. I say this must be the case, as this is Garneau's THIRD tier helmet. When does this ever happen? A Tour team using the lower cost lid....I'm thinking it must be by choice. In my opinion, this is the most functional and best looking helmet offered by Garneau in 2011. What's more Europcar is using the helmet again so far in 2012. Nice.

The helmet uncluttered, with clean lines and huge gulpy vents. The cam lock is unique. I have to completely loosen the cam before pulling on the lid, then tighten. However; what is most important, the retention system fits comfortably, doesn't pinch, and I have yet to go numb.

I've worn this helmet all winter with various headbands, balaclavas, and skull caps. With all variations, the strap system makes a new and perfect fit each time.

Previously, my two other favorite lids have been the Lazer Genesis?(2006) and Specialized SWorks(2008). In my opinion, this helmet easily rivals either of those two.

The only down side, is that the chin strap is white, I believe that it'll become stained during the course of the next two years. But, form me, this is the only downside yet encountered.

This is simply just a pretty great lid.

Great lid!

Months later, this couldn't gush more about this lid. I 'm waiting for this helmet to go on sale for another.
