Some companies think "performance" and "comfort" are two irreconcilable ends of the same spectrum, but Louis Garneau wasn't content to ignore one in favor of the other, so it put a lot of effort into making the Pro Race Shoe as powerful, comfortable, and versatile as possible. It might not be able to replace the seven shoes you're currently alternating between, but the interchangeable footbeds, hyper-adjustable closures, and stiff but surprisingly comfortable sole mean it will be your go-to in all but the most unusual conditions.
Like the way a good house depends on a solid foundation, a killer shoe has to be built on an excellent sole. Garneau constructed the Pro Race on the Carbon HM X-Lite sole, which employs carbon fiber for unbeatable stiffness, power transfer, and weight savings, with the added bonus of a ventilated design that helps move air around your foot to prevent sweat accumulation. Carbon's stiffness and strength allows for an extra-thin construction—just 4.3mm—which, along with 7mm of fore-aft cleat adjustment, provides a hyper-efficient pedaling platform that cuts down on fatigue and helps you reach the finish line faster. Carbon can be tough to manage when you're off the bike, but the Pro Race comes with a replaceable heel pad that improves traction without interfering with your pedaling.
A sole is only as good as the upper on top of it. You'll lose power and sacrifice comfort if your foot is sliding around like a fawn on ice, so Garneau ensured that the upper was as advanced as what's underneath it. Two hook-and-loop straps close the forefoot to prevent side-to-side movement and open away from the drivetrain for easy adjustment on the road, and a ratcheting instep strap provides a snug, highly adjustable closure over the meaty part of your foot. Even better, the ratchet features lateral and vertical adjustments, so you can manipulate it to achieve ideal positioning, removing pressure points and pinching.
As a finishing touch, Garneau included two interchangeable EVA foam footbeds for different conditions. The red Ergo Air Hot Stuff insole provides some extra insulation when you're riding in colder temperatures, and the blue Ice Fill Ergo Air Cool Stuff insole helps your feet stay cool and comfortable when you're roaring up steamy summer climbs. There's a one-way spandex lining in the heel to prevent slipping, a rear reflector for increased visibility, and a shoe bag for safe travel, too—if you can think of anything that LG forgot, it might be time to start designing and building your own footwear.
