In recent years, we've seen mounting data to show that specifically designed clothing, like the Garneau Neo Power Bib Shorts can offer significant performance advantages. The magic is in the blend of material that makes up the body of the shorts. They're composed of 25% Invista Lycra Power. This material helps support your muscles by giving firm yet gentle compression. And with tests showing performance gains of 10% and more, one has to wonder, exactly how does it work?

Power Lycra helps us in a couple of different ways. First, the extra compression helps circulation by providing a boost for venous blood flow from the legs back towards the heart. This is a simple equation -- faster, more efficient flow back through the heart, towards the lungs, recharged with oxygen, and back to the muscles will make you stronger, and last longer. In addition to the beneficial circulatory effect, the material saves your body some of the energy required to make this happen.

Secondly, the Neo Power Bib Shorts are designed to counter the oscillation, or bouncing, of your muscles as you ride. In a wildly exaggerated example, a guy using a jackhammer would experience serious jolting throughout his entire body. And anyone who's wrestled one of these beasts for a full workday will know -- each and every muscle will be painfully sore. This kind of muscle damage can be prevented by stabilizing the muscles. And when they're stabilized, the isolated movement is more accurate and more efficient. The advantages would increase as the road gets rougher.

Considering the functional attributes of the Garneau Neo Power Bib Shorts, they fit like a second skin. Compared to regular shorts, they'll be tighter for sure. This is perfectly normal, and when selecting the size, they should be consistent with your regular sizing in Garneau shorts. The Powerband leg cuff is one aspect of these shorts that we really like. Instead of a strip of coarse elastic and gripper material, it's made of a doubled fold of lycra. So even though the Neo Power shorts are quite snug, the Powerband doesn't feel like you're being ligated for a medical experiment of some sort.

The Garneau Neo Power Bib Shorts are available in five sizes from Small to XX-Large and come in three colors -- Black/Royal, Black/White, and Black. They are cut with 12 panels to ensure a supreme fit. All seams are flat-stitched and chafe-free with none on the inside of the legs. The Airzone Chamois is Garneau's most well ventilated. Its perforated memory foam is beveled at the edges and stitched into a vented four-way stretch, antimicrobial cover. The Neo Power bibs have a small pocket at the back and mesh straps for comfort on hot days.

Here's what others have to say...

  • Familiarity:I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit:True to size

I just returned from a one week cycling trip to Majorca. Struggled to find an extra cycling short for the trip and settled on the Garneau Neo Power Short. Rode in these each day and they were perfect.

Chamois is superb.

On my second day, took a 20 mph tumble approaching the corner of a slick back road - BAM!, onto the right side and my new Neo Power shorts... Ended up with the usual road rash. However, the right hip was rather shallow rash without a single tear in the shorts... incredible (!) since the right hip took the brunt of the fall. Repaired the bike, then got back on and rode the next 50 miles, although a bit more slowly and with respect for slick Spanish roads.

Resolved immediately that when I returned home I would do 2 things: 1. Buy another pair, and 2. Write a review saying "thank you, these are awesome!".

I'm 6'0", 175lbs and the medium fits perfect. The fit is a compression short fit which I'd never had before, and have enjoyed very much on the trip.

Great, but....

    another pic close up

    Great, but....

This one flaw is serious but seems to have stabilized. These are otherwise quite awesome in fit, compression, comfort.

    Great, but....

love everything about these but there are small tears at the seam of the chamois

I am 6 ft and 182 lbs with a 34 waist. Pearl Izumi shorts fit me well in size large, but I'm not sure about these. I would like to try something different, anyone have any advice about the size?

      Hey GW,

I think you'd be better off with an XL in these. Generally speaking Pearl has a bit more of a "Americanized" fit while LG is European.

      Great Fit - questionable durability

Although I've been riding for over 20 years (mostly mountain), I've always skimped on shorts, buying whatever was on sale and wearing them forever. I've recently stepped up my appearence due to increased road riding and went to LBS to try on shorts. These fit well and looked good, so I plunked down the $130. I wore them without washing, and it was like I was sitting in my living room. So very comfortable! Tight in all the right places, loose where they should be, and padding like I'd never felt before. The best $130 I've ever spent. Then I washed them, and the 2nd ride was not as comfortable. I thought maybe just a fluke? I ordered a second pair from Realcyclist (saved tax and free shipping, so only $120) and same thing. First ride awesome, 2nd and following rides not so much. Are all shorts like this? Do any hold up after washing? BTW, I wash on extremely gentle cycle, with little mild detergent, and line dry. I'm 6'3", 195, 34 waist, 35 inseam and the XL fits very well.

I have these shorts and I did not notice the issue you mention. I also line dry them. My waist is 34 and inseam of 30 leaves the large long my leg but the compression on my lower quads is all good. That said I have the Large size and perhaps the XL might be a little loose for you. I suspect all products will loosen up in the wash a bit. You might try drying them on low in the drier (might tighten them up).

        Unanswered Question

I read reviews concerning the extra length...

I read reviews concerning the extra length of the neo power mens shorts and the need to go up a size. My husband is presently wearing the fit sensor 3D short in medium. He is 5'8" and 160 lbs. Would you recommend this cycle short for his height

        Very Comfortable

These shorts are very comfortable. The padding holds snug with no movement. Tight fit but material very stretchy and durable. Maybe a little thicker than some shorts but comfortable. I like the fact that they are made in the USA.

I am about 5'9" and 185 and a little overweight in the belly and wear 33-34" jeans. The Medium size fits well and snug. If I was any bigger in the hips i'd have to go up a size.

A question about size. I am 178 cm tall...

A question about size. I am 178 cm tall (5'10"), 78 kg (170 lbs) and a waist 84 cm (33"). Would size medium or large be my best choice? Regards, Frank (Australia)

Medium should fit you fine. If you like a longer fit (closer to your knee), i would recommend a large. The medium should be right on the money spot for your leg for a height of 5' 10''.

I'm about the same size as you and initially ordered the large but sent it back for the medium. Great fit. Excellent compression, length is very good (and I like my shorts long). On the large I found the rise to be too high. I felt they were creeping halfway up to my armpits. Medium solved that. Great shorts, by the way and RealCyclist was terrific on the return.

          homegrown quality

While these shorts don't breathe as well as I would hope on hotter days, they offer pretty excellent padding and comfort. And like a lot of the higher end Garneau product, they're made here in the USA, and definitely feel like it. Beefy materials, and beefy stitching make for a short that feel like they'll go the distance.

Doesn't hurt that they look rad as hell either.

            * I have about a 30" waist, but no sprinter thighs. the Medium has been a pretty good fit
            * waist drawcord is totally unnecessary

            Great short

The comfort, materials and fit are the best I have owned. I ride around 35-60 miles at a time and these shorts have good support and breathe nicely. Have used these shorts approx a dozen rides and have no quality issues. Would highly recomend for any riding distance.

Most comfortable riding shorts I have owned. I especially like the longer inseam. Padding is great with no rubbing or chafing.
