Go long.

Minimalistic shorts have their place on race day, but for long days in the saddle that don't end at a finish line, the Louis Garneau Neo-Lite Power Men's Cycling Shorts are a more appropriate choice. The Neo-Lite Power combines mid-weight compressive properties with enhanced breathability and functional details, recommending them for everything from multi-hour base-building sessions to gran fondos and charity rides. The lack of bibs is an especially welcome feature when those long days in the saddle inevitably involve one or more natural breaks.

The Neo-Lite Power shorts' star material is LG's Light Power, which isn't as compressive as the brand's Power+ Lycra but does add an element of support not often in seen in kit at this level. The payoff is a reduction in the small vibrations and muscle oscillation that, over the course of a day in the saddle, accumulate into a wall of fatigue. Light Power won't turn the pedals for you, but it will help ensure your legs can turn them longer.

The shorts' theme of support carries through to their other fabric, Delfino, which is a dimpled synthetic that puts a premium on cooling ventilation and moisture-managing breathability. It still offers light muscle support, but its main job revolves around keeping you cool and dry while your pedals revolve around the bottom bracket.

The multi-panel construction is a typical feature of LG shorts, as is the cycling-friendly, pre-shaped fit. Once assembled, the shorts are finished with an Airzone chamois, which lacks some of the tweaks and features of LG's race-day models but serves the endurance cyclist's purposes with a strategic topography of supportive padding and tapered, pre-molded wings that create a smooth transition between chamois and shorts. The shorts are held in place by an elastic, drawstring waist and compressive leg bands, and ride items—from empty gel wrappers to a handful of trial mix pilfered from a rest stop—are held in place by a thigh pocket.

  • An endurance cycling short built for long days in the saddle
  • Blends lightly compressive and highly breathable fabrics
  • Airzone chamois targets multi-hour comfort
  • Drawstring waistband for comfortable fit
  • Leg bands keep shorts in place without pinching
  • Finishing touches include gel pocket and reflective details

Very Good shorts, good value

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: True to size

The fabric on these shorts make them a great fit for my legs. They stretch where they need to stretch and they're snug in just the right places. They don't ride up even without the sticky strips along the bottom of the legs. I love the small pocket on the right leg; great place for a gel. I have big legs and a big butt, a sprinters body (88kg.) and they're very comfortable. Some shorts don't come up high enough in the back or are too high in the front but these hit the mark. I'll probably get a second pair soon.
