Here's what others have to say...

Not the most technical

This is my first pair of mountain biking shoes, and for that purpose they work very well. They are a very comfortable shoe- I've used them on rides of about 30min to multiple hour rides and have never felt any pain or hot spots. They do have a pretty wide toe box- I typically prefer a more narrow fit, but these will do for now. I wear a street size 7, and got the size 38.
Now on to the more technical aspects. They are very easy to adjust and get a tight fit. The ratchet system works well- I haven't ever found it to get stuck, and it works fairly quickly to get on and tighten up. My gripe comes with their durability. On my first ride- which literally lasted 20 minutes before night set in- one of the loosening pieces on the ratchet busted. If one of the release pieces breaks, there is no way to loosen that belt piece across your ankle- you must have both pieces working. So I used a steak knife to loosen them up. THANKFULLY Louis Garneau really does stand behind their products, and sent me replacement buckles without any question. I also just found that one of the screws on the bottom under the ball of my foot came out- and I have no idea how.
All in all, they are a good shoe but they are not the most technical out there. They're serving their purpose as my first shoes pretty well, but I will most definitely be upgrading them.

    comfortable shoe

    • Familiarity:I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
    • Fit:True to size

These are my first pair of mountain biking shoes. I bought a pair of Bontrager Evoke shoes at a bike shop but they weren't really comfortable so I returned them, and they had a limited selection of styles and sizes for women(what's new?) so didn't have anything else that would work. I live in a rural area so don't have a large selection of stores to go to without traveling a fair distance. I hesitate to order shoes on-line because I have a hard time finding any shoes that are comfortable but I decided to take a chance on these.

I wear a size 8 in street shoes but sometimes have to go up 1/2 size in tennis shoes and hiking shoes. The Louis Garneau sizing chart (from the Louis Garneau website) showed that an 8 = 39.5 european sizing. Backcountry didn't have a 39.5 available so I decided to try the 40. It's a good fit. It has a rounded toe box, which is good for my somewhat wide feet. The heel slips a little but that's pretty typical for shoes on my feet and I can tighten the ratchet, which takes care of that problem.

I read comments about the ratchet being difficult to undo, and it took me about 1/2 hour to figure it out. Once I did, I discovered that it's very easy. It would have been nice if the shoes had come with instructions on that. It was a little different that other ratchets I've seen.

I've only used the shoes twice but so far they're comfortable and functional.

    Great overall shoe

    • Familiarity:I've put it through the wringer
    • Fit:True to size

Contrary to the other reviews I have read, my wife really enjoys these shoes. They are great for beginners, are comfortable with ample amounts of padding. Not too narrow throughout the whole shoe, they are a great fit for her normal to wider feet. Only downfall is the release can be tricky, making it awkward to get out of your shoes after a ride.

OK shoe, but not very comfortable

    • Familiarity:I've used it several times

I bought these shoes for my wife to start learning to ride clipless pedals. They seem well made, but she complains that they aren't comfortable and dig into her feet.

I do not like these shoes at all. They fell cheaply made. I had the Shimano SH-WM62 Women's Shoes and loved these. The Shimano is really easy to get in and out of unlike the Louis Garneau/Monte MTB. The micro-adjust buckle is always getting caught on something when I take it off and I have to fight with it for a bit. The Shimano is really fluid and easy to take off and comfortable. The Louis Garneau is not comfortable. If you want a good shoe go with a shimano.
