Who doesn't appreciate value? We certainly do, and if you're looking at the Louis Garneau LS-100 Shoes, you must as well. We simply can't think of any other shoes that better match technology features with price. In fact, with a BOA L4 retention system, a stiff outsole, and nearly unrivaled ventilation, we're still trying to figure out how Garneau essentially created a $350 pair of shoes for well under $300.

Starting at the outsole, Garneau sought to achieve the perfect balance between strength, rigidity, and weight. Are you thinking carbon fiber? So were we. However, the LS-100 utilizes Garneau's Ergo Air II soles -- a carbon-reinforced nylon. This means that you gain both the stiff benefits of carbon fiber and the controlled flex of a nylon matrix. What does this really amount to, though? Well, coupled with the LS-100's low stack height, the Ergo Air II's composition and rigidity equate to a direct transfer of power to the pedals. Just like in frame design, the outsole has a stiffness-to-weight ratio that positively promotes an efficient carry of power with limited energy dispersion. So, in simpler terms, these outsoles make your hard efforts count in relation to speed.

In terms of the aforementioned flexibility, you've surely felt berated by overly stiff outsoles at some point in your riding. The nylon matrix of the Ergo Air IIs amounts to a calculated percentage of 'give' under load. Essentially, this is minute enough that you won't notice it on climbs or hard drives, however, after 80k, your feet certainly will. Comfort without the penalty of weight is the design philosophy at work here.

And speaking of weight, the LS-100 tips the scales at a lower weight than many other manufacturer's top offerings -- 255g per shoe. This is credited, in one part, to the outsole, but in our opinion, more so to the lightweight upper construction. This has been constructed from a synthetic leather with mesh ventilation windows along the side of the shoe and over the entire tongue. This means that durability is guaranteed without the risk of the adaptive long-term deformity that plagues natural leather uppers. More importantly, though, a bulk of the weight reduction is a result of the LS-100's closure system. At the toe box, you'll find a single hook-and-loop strap that controls the lower volume of the shoe. Meanwhile, and a first for us at this price, the venerable BOA L4 single rail controls the retention at the top of the tongue. If you hadn't noticed, BOA is highly selective as to who it chooses to license to, and that this technology is featured in a $160 shoe is, well, nearly unheard of. Essentially, the L4 buckle provides the most even, forgiving, simple-to-use, and precise retention on the market. With a simple quick turn of the dial, your retention is secured and unwavering.

However, even with all of the above, Garneau wasn't done yet. To prevent the power-sapping effects of heel slippage, the LS-100 features Garneau's HRS-90 technology. Basically, this is a reinforcement panel that cups the heel from the inner and outer points of the outsole, forming a 'band' over the heel. As admittedly basic of a design this is, it works very well at maintaining the secure position of the heel.

Great entry-level shoe

I bought this a year ago.
The shoes are comfortable, lightweight for the price and the boa system is ok (just ok).
If you´re on a budget (less than $100) look no more. The design is very clean.
More than 2000 km on this pair and no signs of wearing.
One note, usually I´m 9 (US) on Nike and New Balance sneakers, but on this I bought a pair of 10 (US)

Good Entry-Level Shoe

I bought these despite the other negative reviews because the price was right and I wanted a shoe with a lot of vents. I own Sidi and Shimano and wanted to try something with the boa system. I'm a recreational rider @ 100-150 miles a week and have put about 500 miles on them so far. They fit my narrow foot well and have performed as expected. I don't push/pull when I pedal as that myth has been busted countless times, so, the boa has never disengaged unless I do so with my hands.

I've taken them in the shower with me to rinse them out several times and as long as you pull the inserts, they dry overnight.

The materials are typical for a shoe in this price point.

Overall, it's a $160 shoe with a boa system. Great for recreational riders, Gran Fondos and the occasional race.


Boa system doesn't justify the price

I've been using the Louis Garneau LS 100 Men's Road Shoe for at least a year logging over 400 hours.

Pros: boa buckle system

Cons: poor design, poor quality control / inconsistent, cheap materials, heavy

I purchased these shoes for the boa buckle system which is great when placed on a good shoe. Unfortunately, the shoes suck.

They're poorly designed with the buckle attached to the soft upper material without a firm foundation to lock the buckle in place. This allows the buckle to pop out of position and unlock with upward ankle pressure when pushing/pulling hard on the pedals.

The bulky lining absorbs and retains moisture too easily so your feet get soaked on long rides and the shoes don't dry quickly so you end up with shoes that stink over time.

The sole itself is stiff which is good because it's made of thick heavy plastic that weighs down the shoe which is bad.

Also, the shoes deviate in size by 1/3 - 1/2 inch due to poor quality control in manufacturing. On the same pair, my left ankle tends to slip out because the left shoe is 1/2 inch shorter on the back than the right shoe. I've attached pictures showing the height difference between the left and right shoe.

Conclusion: Don't waste your money on these shoes.

Boa system doesn't justify the price

First thing I noticed after trying on the shoes was the rear part of

the shoe digging into the side of my ankle - these shoes seem to

be cut a little too high (at the back around the ankles) for my feet.

A lower profile in this ankle area would have been perfect for me.

Returning them.
