Without pedals, riding a bike would be a lot more difficult.

In mountain biking, people talk of privateers. That's most of the world; people who buy their own stuff. And when counting pennies and doing spreadsheet calculations and analyzing cost-per-gram, the less flashy parts -- the Chorus', Force's, Ultegra's of the world, often offer 99% of the performance at 50-75% of the price. The Look Keo 2 Max fits in the performance without the price slot. It does everything the Keo 2 Max Carbon does, just without the carbon-fiber pedal body.

One great feature of the Keo 2 is the stainless steel wear plate atop the center of the pedal body. This adds tremendous durability to the system. But they did more than add a cap to their pedals. They redesigned the shape so it is wider, amongst the widest clipless pedal around. This 57mm platform width helps increase the surface area that contacts the cleat to 340mm², but that doesn't effect the cornering clearance as the pedal body is narrower on the bottom.

Look also went to town on their axle. They increased the diameter to 12mm on the crank side for greater stiffness. And they kept the stack height to a minimum, 15.7mm -- which necessitated two roller bearings on the crank side, with a needle bearing on the outside of the spindle.

The Keo 2 Max pedal bodies are made from a polyamide composite. The wear plate and axle are both stainless steel. The Q-Factor is 53mm, and can be increased to 55mm with the use of a 2mm spacer that goes between the spindle and the crank (sold separately). The release tension can be adjusted from 9-15Nm. There are three float options for the cleats, fixed aka zero float (Black) cleats, 4.5-degrees float (Grey) cleats, and 9-degrees of float (Red) cleats. The pedals come with the Grey Keo Grip cleats. The pedal body comes in either Graphite or White with a Black retention bar. There is a two-year warranty on the pedals. The Look Keo 2 Max Carbon Pedals have a claimed weight of 130g per pedal or 328g per pair, which includes cleats and hardware.

  • Carbon-injected pedal body and stainless steel cleat contact area for added reliability
  • Low pedal stack height for excellent power transfer
  • Q-factor may be extended by 2mm using additional spacers available separately

The Look Keo 2 Max pedals do an acceptable job as a clipless road pedal. They are easy to clip out of and provide a stable pedaling platform. However, I have found that while they are hard to fault, they don't really excel in anything like Speedplay's do. The Speedplay Zero's I also own are lighter, offer more float, great corner clearance and double sided entry. There really wasn't anything that the Look's were superior at which is why they got the rating they did.

All in all, they do a decent job as road pedal's but simply are not better than other equally priced options on the market *Speedplay*

Sweet pedal

I have these on my GIANT TCR Advanced SL1, with SRAM RED. Great pedals! They have a low profile, easy in and easy out (the new plate design works well and does not wear much), great power transfer, easy adjustability, and a smooth rotation.

I've used SPD's for years but elected to install the Keo 2 Max's on my new carbon bike. I can't believe how difficult it is to break them loose.
They're factory adjusted to the lowest pressure setting but I have to do a major high torque heal twist (to the outside) to get them to release. I have the greys on my Sidi's so I put red's on my other shoes but the red's are even harder to release. Defect or perhaps a break in period?

Responded on

If you are comparing the feel of a Look Keo to a spd pedal I can understand your concern. The effort to release is entirely different especially considering the Look has a fixed front mounting point so you can't toe out at all.

You mentioned factory adjusted. If you hanven't tried get a hex wrench on the pedal and turn counter clockwise to see if the tension can be released some.

Look KEO 2 MAX

Have this pedal on my Tommasini Super Prestige and Trek Madone 6.5. Great release adjustment, larger platform, smooth rotation and low profile design. Stainless insert a big improvement from a wear perspective. Have had NO issues or concerns and would highly recommend this pedal. Ride safe and often.

I've read in some forums recently that there are problems with the KEO Max pedal spindle not loosening up. Is there a recall on these pedals or has this issue been resolved?

Responded on

I understand the Look has rectified this issue but a recall wouldn't be issued because it poses no safety concern. All new pedal sets are shipping with a modified rubber seal but many dealers still have inventory of some with stiff seals.

In my experience, Realcyclist is great with returns and exchanges and has sent me exchanges with no cost to me. So if you find yourself with a stiff pedal you won't be stuck with it like you are with ebay or other online retailers.

No recall on the Keo 2 Max pedals. They are really nice, increased surface area under foot 12% , inlayed stainless wear protection and very lightweight. The only thing I have noticed is it took a few rides for the bearing seals to break in, now they spin like a top. If you have a sticky pair of seals LOOK will replace your axle set.
