A very, very bright idea.

There’s no way around the fact that riding your bike at night can be dangerous. Not being able to see the trail or path in front of you is its own hazard, never mind the cars and trucks that may or may not see you if you’re riding along a road. To mitigate the stress and risk of nighttime riding, there’s no substitute for visibility, and the Light & Motion Urban 800 Headlight is the brightest and most visible in the company’s Urban product lineup, making it a smart move for anyone caught out after the sun sets.

Cranking out an impressive 800 lumens, the Urban 800 is a veritable spotlight for the road or trail. It not only helps you see, it virtually guarantees that you are seen, as well. The 800 can be mounted on your helmet or handlebar with the included flexible mounting system. Aware of the dreaded “snowball” effect of some lights that concentrate their focus on a small area of the beam, engineers at L&M custom-engineered a reflector system that evenly and smoothly disperses all 800 lumens of LED light across your depth of field as you ride. Obstacles both near and far are detected as you approach them, not only as you turn your gaze toward them. The result is a more relaxed and natural nighttime riding experience. Amber-colored sidebars of light on the unit, as well as a IP67 (very good) waterproof rating, ensure that you’re not only visible from any angle, but that you’re visible in any weather, too.

The Light & Motion Urban 800 Headlight is mountable on either your handlebar or helmet and requires no tools for installation. It measures 4 inches long by 1.2 inches wide, takes 5 hours to fully charge, and it comes in two colors: Anchor Steam and Steamroller.

  • Cree LED bulbs
  • 800 lumens of light
  • IP67 waterproof rating
  • High, medium, low, and flash modes

Great light

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

This is a fantastic light. The 800l setting is frankly more than is needed in most urban environments, but it's incredibly nice to have for when the extra burst of light is needed. The battery life is very reasonable, especially if you run it primarily on one of the lower settings. I commute in the early mornings, before it is light out. My ride is a little more than a half hour, and I generally charge the light every 2-3 days. I have never had the battery run out on me.

The light is also very durable. I have put it through a lot of weather (winter commuting), with no problems. I have also clumsily dropped the light on pavement more times than I like to admit, and the light still works perfectly. Definitely recommend!

Outstanding service

So I bought this urban 800 but unfortunately it was swiped from my front door before I got home so I called S&C to get another, price couldn't be beat, explaining what had happened and they immediately sent out a replacement free of charge or shipping. I was not expecting that and it blew me away. The light itself is a wonderful upgrade from a 300L that I have and really like the pulse feature, bright with a nice beam width. Think I've found my new go to site.

    Shine your way home!

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I have used this light about 5 times now. It is really bright considering the price you're paying...the only thing I didn't like is the battery life on this thing. I get about 2 hours of total use before I have to recharge again.

    great light

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times

This is a great light for commuting in NYC. Very bright light and the latching system seems to work great. Wish the blinking mode was a bit more blinky. Very happy with this light

    compact.

    Head Light
    Pros:
    -Great light,,small, and compact.
    -No external wires flopping around.
-It attaches and un-attaches easily from the bike.
    - It’s extremely bright on the highest setting. It switches easily between settings. I went on a 3 hour ride and used the lowest setting for flats and climbing and then increased the brightness on the fast downhills. Works like a charm.

    Cons:
    - The battery life isn’t awesome. It lasted perfectly fine for my three hour ride but any longer and it would have gone out. I was switching between the settings though and so I imagine it would have lasted longer if I had stayed on a consistent lower beam.

    atomic proof light

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

Very bright, very durable, solid all around light. There are few few lights i would recommend that are in the same category as this light.

    Best light for the money

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

This light is super bright, even in its lower settings. Charging is simple and it's super easy to install and remove.

    Super bright!

    • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

I use this in conjunction with the L@M 1200 on my handlebars. It's like daytime at night! I really like this setup. I feel comfortable going at speed during the night with both of these used together.

can you see me now? yes you can

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

this light is so bright, you will defiantly be seen, and you will be able to ride in the darkest of night and be able to see everything in front of you. the light charges super fast and last for a way long time. this light is also very light, and looks great as well.

    Awesome Value Headlight

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I have owned this light now for about 4 months, and I have to say this has changed my life! Having the ability to get off the 9-5 work grind in the fall and winter, and still be able to hop on my MTB and pedal at dusk/night is amazing. This light is the perfect size to mount on any helmet, and offers amazing power for such a small unit. This paired with something of similar lumen count on the handle bars offers more than enough light. The USB charge port in convenient, and quick. It pairs great with the Smith Forefront Helmet and their proprietary headlmap mount http://www.backcountry.com/Store/catalog/search.jsp?q=smith%20forefront&s=a

I would buy this light again in a heart beat!

modern times, no more wires, lighter!

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I've been using this as a bar mount on my mountain bike, either in conjunction with my helmet mount light, or as a back up when I'm riding at dusk, and just need a little extra light to get back to my car. I would not use it as my only light for MTB, but great as a secondary, emergency, or back-up.

I LOVE that the battery is integrated, so there are no wires running down the frame, or an extra heavy battery you have to creatively attach to your bike.

It also gives you a warning light indicator when the battery is getting low. Very nice feature. Buttons are easy to use. and the USB re-charge is great because you no longer need a dedicated charging cable for just this light. I can plug this into the same charger that my Droid cell phone uses (micro USB).

I also have the Taz 1500. For comparison... the Urban is more compact, but the 1500 is definitely a bit brighter (as expected). Otherwise very similar. The 1500 has an actual flash mode, and the 800 has more of a slow pulse mode. The 1500 has a slightly whiter light, and the 800 is a slightly warmer light. Both mount easily and solidly to 35mm diameter MTB bars. Both are easy to recharge. Both have low battery indicators. The 1500 seems to die a little faster, but that may be expected from having a brighter light. I haven't done any actual tests though, it may be more of a feeling than science.

Good light, but NO flash mode

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times

Very bright, nice beam pattern. The beam has good spread but a little less depth so lights with a more focused spotlight pattern are better for higher road speeds. Light weight, small size, very good quick mounting system. Unit pivots on the mount which is very nice. Amber side lights are a good feature.

DOES NOT FLASH - it only pulses slightly on the low setting which is perfect for keeping the road visible on that setting and a total total fail for use as a warning light, for example in daytime or on a running path. If you need a true flash mode, this will not work. If not, it is a great little light.
