Being safe is more fun sometimes.

Biking blind is fun, in the same way that burning yourself with cigarettes is fun, but if you've had enough danger and would rather see than live life on the edge of unnecessary pain, you might want to investigate the Light & Motion Urban 500 Headlight. It's a slim, low-profile light that puts out 500 lumens via a Cree LED bulb, so you can see where you're going and other people can see you coming. Four modes give you the appropriate illumination for any condition, and the seriously water-resistant casing can withstand being submerged one meter deep for up to half an hour, so you can turn your bike into a short-range pedal-powered submarine if you really want to. Small amber ports on the side serve up 180-degree visibility, and a convenient battery-life indicator light lets you know when it's time to recharge the lithium ion battery.

  • Cree LED bulb
  • Low, medium, high, and flash modes
  • 500 lumen maximum output
  • Amber side lighting
  • Battery-life indicator
  • Highly water-resistant design
  • Rechargeable battery

Great light for a great value

  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

I was super excited to get this light for my commuter bike. It has more light output than the little stinger combo I was using and comes in a light and sleek style.
This was super easy to install on the handlebars and provided a lot of light while i was out late at night. Unfortunately it was easy to remove and was stolen off my bike. Definitely going to get another one but planning to remember to take it off each time I lock up my bike.

Very functional and easy to use.

Very solid bike light for the price. The light has a wide and bright beam, which are my primary concerns. Charging is easy, and switching between modes is very simple.

The description says "handlebar/helmet mount", which I interpreted to mean that the light would be compatible with both. It only comes with the handlebar mount, but you can buy a helmet adapter for $10. I thought that was a bit deceptive considering it was one of the reasons I chose this light. I suppose any light can be helmet adaptable with some duct tape.

Overall, I'm happy with the light and would recommend it.

Great Battery Life & Projection

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I originally bought this light for commuting around town as I wanted a high quality light that would make me easily visible to vehicles. It mounts quickly, offers outstanding side visibility, and great battery life (with battery life signal on the back). I eventually used this light while hiking at night, which was actually worked quite well since the shape of the light with strap is easy to hold in your hand. The beam projection and battery life are what sold me on it though and I use it for hiking all the time now. I wish I could turn off the side markers to extend the battery life further, but they are not bothersome while hiking. Whether I'm riding in the evening hours or chasing daylight down from a long hike in the mountains I always grab this light.

Suspect battery life

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

The 500 lumens are awesome. I get a super safe feeling operating with such a high beam on my ride home from wok. That is, when the light works... it's died on me twice on my ride home. THe first time, after three rides (approx 35mins each). So I felt confident it had a 100 minute burn time. The second time it died was after one ride home. That has me concerned.
My wife has been using it for shorter rides and hasn't complained of failure yet. I've swapped hers and mine to make sure she keeps a good charge so I don't think we have a lemon. It could've just been operator error on my part. I may not have charged it as long as needed.

Will keep using it, but just need to be more diligent about keeping a good charge. Excellent light with wide field of view and powerful.
