Description

Bright and Light.

Staying safe on a night ride largely depends on your being able to see where you're going. And with the Light and Motion Stella 500 Light, visibility will be the least of your concerns. The whole package weighs in around 230 grams including a battery, so whether you're mounting it to your handlebar or to your helmet, you'll barely notice that it's there. And with 500 lumens bathing the trail in glorious light, your riding season just got a whole lot longer.

The 500 designation associated with the Stella reflects its 500 lumen maximum output capacity. And for the uninitiated, 500 lumens is more than sufficient to illuminate your favorite trails in the dark. In fact, it's so bright that there's three lower output settings as well. Accordingly, the battery life of the Stella is thoroughly increased. For example, while the full 500 lumens may be necessary for descents and high speed trails, climbs and slower sections allow you to get by with a more moderate output. At 500 lumens, the Stella provides just over two-and-a-half hours of run time off of a full charge. Meanwhile, the medium setting puts out 275 lumens for 6 hours, and the low setting yields 140 lumens for 12 hours. But, sometimes the issue isn't seeing as much as it is being seen. In those cases, you're able to use a 140 lumen pulse setting, which keeps the light blinking for 24 hours.

The Stella gets its power from a two cell lithium-ion battery. In combination with its svelte aluminum body, the complete light system weighs in around a feathery 230 grams. And with the system's light weight, a 50-inch power cord, and a helmet mount, the Stella becomes perfect for helmet mounting. So, you'll always have your light pointed precisely where you need it. Hidden inside the body of the light is a pair of bi-conic reflectors. And in case you're wondering what that means, basically, the full output of each bulb is directed towards your field of vision by reflective elements inside the light. The result is bright, even lighting, without any wasted power.

You might imagine that lighting this powerful puts off some serious heat, and you'd be right. That's why L&M engineered aluminum cooling fins that control the heat and maximize the life of the bulbs. And the tool-free mounting system makes attaching and removing your light a breeze.

The Light and Motion Stella 500 Light is available in the color Sapphire. Please note that the battery, power cord, helmet/bike mount, and charger are all included with this light.

Love it.

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

Lightweight and surprisingly light are my favorite features of this light. I use it for both night road and mountain cycling, and have also purchased and additional head mount for running. It's a really good middle of the road option if you don't want to spend upwards of $500 for a 2000 Lumen light. Be sure to fully charge it before the first use, and fully run out the battery on first use as well. Helps to get the most life out of your battery for the first use, and many uses to come. Highly highly recommend this!

Surprised at how bright it is

  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

I didn't want to spend nearly 2X as much on a 1500 or 2000 lumen light and decided to try the 500 lumen version. After a few rides in the snow at night (fat bike) I am super impressed with how bright it is. Granted the reflective surface of the snow probably helps quite a bit so I am looking forward to summer to test out how it does in a more light absorbing environment. With that said, I feel like I can rally pretty much everything at speed and not hold back because of limited vision. I have the light mounted on my helmet with the included mount and keep the battery in the back of my shirt. I have a long torso and the cord is just long enough and does not hinder movement. It is so light that I don't even know its there. I wish it came with a tether for the cord on the back of my helmet but I just rigged it with a zip tie. Have not truly tested battery life yet but am happy with my purchase.

Would this work well for road riding as well? I want something that has both constant light for night riding and a pulse setting for daytime riding. Thanks!

Yes, it works great for road riding. It was so bright some cyclists going the opposite direction commented that it was too bright. It's able to swivel, so I turned it to the right a little so it would not annoy oncoming cyclists. Highly recommend this light for road and mtb.
