It's getting dark, and the only audible sounds are from your pedals turning over, the tires on the gravel, and a distant sound of the forest settling in for the night. As you reach the summit of the hills, you watch the sun set on the distant horizon before you flick on your light to descend. Sadly, you have to ride your brakes down the single track at a snails pace because your light isn't bright enough to see what's in front of you. It's time to invest in a new light before you waste any more money on new brake pads. Ditch your ill equipped light and send the trail like you were meant to with a Light & Motion Seca 1700 Race Light. The Seca 1700 puts out an ample 1700 lumens, providing all of the light that you need for night rides with friends or for your next 24-hour race.

Designed for night trail rides and racing, the Seca is the crowned King of Light from Light & Motion. With its increased lumens and battery life, the Seca 1700 is lighting the way brighter and longer than ever. And though many light manufacturers have picked up on the high-lumen craze, Light & Motion hasn't simply added lumens to the Seca for the sake of brightness, it's redesigned the light to use the power output more wisely and efficiently. Due to the Seca's bi-conic reflector, its six LED bulbs cast an intense light in a wide beam that makes you forget that it's nighttime.

Four settings on the Seca let you adjust the output in accordance to the desired application. Now, you can expect a range between 1.5 to 15 hours of light. High puts out 1700 lumens, medium 850, and low and flash are both at 425 lumens. All 1700 lumens are essential to some while descending the trail, but going up hill doesn't require firing up every lumen. Thanks to the race mode setting, you can use less light while ascending the trail by skipping the medium and flash mode -- this leaves you with the high and low settings only. And when you're ready to head back down the trail, a push of the power button has you back at full power.

For convenience, the light mounts on either your helmet or handlebars. The three-cell, lithium-ion battery comes with 127 cm of cord -- enough length to stow the battery in your backpack or strap it to your top tube. It's also worth mentioning that the helmet mount works with all Light & Motion helmet compatible lights. The Seca weighs in around a feathery 343 grams -- a small price to pay for instant daylight on the trails. Along with the weight changes, the Seca also features a lower profile design to minimize any obstruction.

The Light & Motion Seca 1700 Race Light is available in the color Black/silver, and the light, battery, cord, and charger are all included.

Retina Searing Brightness

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

Amazing retina searing 1700 lumens! While this is an older model, it still packs a wallop. The actual light portion of the Seca 1700 is light and while mounted on a helmet it is barely noticeable. The only time I noticed the weight of the light it was riding downhill when my helmet would tip slightly (even then is was quite minor). That was easily resolved by tightening the retention system on the back a click or two (will vary depending on your helmet).

I would recommend an extra velcro strap or any other type of easy to remove fastener for the battery cord. While routing the cable from the light to the battery, the cord moves around a bit and would tap my ear from time to time. At first it freaked me out because I thought some blood sucking insect or animal was trying to get into my ear but luckily it was just the cord flapping in the wind.

The battery is small and light enough to have in a jersey pocket and pretty much disappears in a hydration pack. The battery can also be strapped to your frame with the included velcro strap. There are slots on the battery body the strap can thread through and secure the battery to your frame.

The light has a bar mount built into it and a helmet mount is included. The helmet mount uses a velcro strap that you weave through your helmet vents to secure. The Seca light then uses the built in bar mount to strap to the helmet mount. When putting the mount on your helmet, it can be a little frustrating, depending on the location of the vents on your helmet…before your first time riding with the Seca, it would be easier to test your setup well before your ride so you will not be stuck in the dark finagling with the strap.

The one thing I feel could be improved would be the on/off button on the light. It is sleek and looks nice but difficult to feel the button with full finger (not insulated) mountain bike gloves on. A slight indentation or other affordance would be nice.

The light has three different levels of beams and also a blinking mode. It can also be put into race mode if you hold the button down for two seconds (when the light is off….not when it is on). Race mode allows you to switch between the high beam and low beam setting and omitting the medium beam and blink modes. I prefer the race mode since when climbing I use the lowest beam setting and high for the descents. It would be nice if it had an option to stay in race mode instead of having to do the button hold every time you powered the light on.

If you are looking for a super bright light to ride with check out the Seca 1700 or one of the newer Seca 2000.

Excellent quality, clear, powerful light

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I dont have an action shot of this light at the moment, I am usually too distracted by fun to stop and take a picture.

This light is simply great. Build quality is great. The beam is wide which prevents the tunnel vision you would get with a narrow focused beam. I love this. when you are HAULING down single track in the pitch dark you need to be aware of surroundings, not just what is on the trail.

When my Lezyne light on my bar failed miserably, I still felt plenty of confidence with the Seca mounted atop my helmet (on the bars are lezyne 700 and blackburn 700)

You can probably find a cheaper light sure, but the quality of the product and the quality of the light it produces is very hard to beat.

Feel free to ask me any questions.

Excellent quality, clear, powerful light
