Description

Light up the night.

Why stop riding just because the sun is taking a break? With the Light and Motion Seca 1500 Light, you don't have to. In the full-strength setting, it puts out 1500 lumens of trail illuminating light for two hours of ride time. And if you turn down the setting, you won't have to sacrifice any battery life for power. Better yet, at around 343 grams, you'll enjoy all of that illumination without feeling like you're carrying a brick in the process. Just make sure to watch out for deer -- we all know how they like headlights.

Light and Motion employs six top quality LEDs in order to generate the Seca's 1500 lumens. Not only are the LEDs bright, but they're also highly efficient. In the 1500 lumen setting, the light provides two hours of run time off of a full charge. And if you're looking to boost the battery life, you're also able to turn the power down, while still providing plenty of illumination. For example, while full-power may be necessary for descents and high speed trails, climbs and slower sections allow you to get by with a more moderate output. Accordingly, you have the option to run the Seca 1500 at either a medium 800 lumen setting or a low 450 lumen setting. Additionally, you're able to turn the 450 lumen setting to pulse mode for times when your visibility to others is your primary concern. In terms of battery life, Light and Motion estimates that the Seca provides four hours of light in the medium setting, eight hours in the low setting, and 16 hours in pulse mode. Additionally, Light and Motion incorporated its 'Race' mode with the Seca. With just a two-second push, you're able to set the Seca to cycle between a two-hour high and four-hour low setting.

Powering the Seca is a three cell lithium-ion battery. The result is a light system that weighs in around a svelte 343 grams. This means that you won't have to pay a weight penalty to bathe your favorite trials in crisp, bright light. Hidden inside the body of the light is a pair of bi-conic reflectors. And in case you're wondering what that means, basically, the full output of each bulb is directed towards your field of vision by reflective elements inside of the light. The result is bright, even lighting that doesn't waste any power.

You might imagine that lighting this powerful puts off some serious heat, and you'd be right. That's why L&M engineered aluminum cooling fins, which control the heat and maximize the life of the bulbs. There's a tool-free mounting system that makes attaching and removing your light a breeze. Better yet, it's easily compatible with aftermarket mounts, including a head mount for precise beam placement.

The Light and Motion Seca 1500 Light is available in the color Quartz. Please note that the battery, power cord, and charger are all included with this light.

Seca 1500

  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

The Seca lineup from Light & Motion offers the best beam pattern I have found. If peripheral vision is a priority, L&M is where you will want to look. The 1500 with 3 cell battery offers a plethora of light for your average night rides. My favorite feature is the Race Mode which toggles between High and Medium settings instead of High/Medium/Low/Flash. The feature makes transitioning from a low speed climb to high speed descent very smooth. The headlight is lightweight and has a really easy to use rubber strap to secure to your handlebar. On my 31.8mm handlebars I can only use the last or second to last hole on the strap so use on a larger diameter may be difficult such as 35mm mtb bars. The battery can strap easily onto a seatpost or frame tube by use of a large Velcro strap. I haven’t given the battery a good run for its money, but L&M claim the 3 cell battery 2 hours on High beam (1500 lumens), 4 hours on Medium (800 lumens), and 8 hours on Low (450 lumens).

Hey Kevin,

How about a up-date on this light? I'm between this, and the Taz model ($)...but concerned the Taz won't offer enough battery life. So how's this one performed so far?

Thanks

Hey Debbie,

As for an update, unfortunately I finished up the test period I had with the light and it went back to Light and Motion. Unfortunately I haven't had opportunity to test out the Taz to offer a comparison. I assume you were referring to the Taz 1200 as a comparison. Both products certainly have their advantages. In my opinion, the Seca is designed with off road in mind being that you can mount it on a handlebar or helmet, and has an external battery whereas the Taz is an all-in-one unit designed more from commuting only offered in a handlebar mount scenario. The Taz does offer side markers for better visibility in congested areas, which typically would not a concern off road. Since run time is a major concern, it would be helpful to know what you are planning on using the light for. For off road, I would pick the Seca for the amount of light/run time as well as being able to put the weight of the battery somewhere more centralized on the bike. That is not to say the Taz would not function well as an off road light. I just think it?s run time would be ideal for those going on shorter rides, such as 2 hours or less. Using Light and Motions Race Mode would be ideal to maximize run time on either light. It offers an alternative output high/low only setting to toggle between while riding to not only make it easy to switch modes, but save battery life as well.

Keep in mind that we do offer a 90 day return policy on used items meaning that you could purchase either of the lights, try them out and if it doesn?t work for your needs - return it back to us within 3 months for a store credit you can use on an alternative light.
