Perhaps your night riding needs don't require a steady stream of 1000 lumens. In fact, for most of us, 400 lumens is more than enough to get the job done. After all, police issue flashlights only illuminate around 220 lumens. This is where the Lezyne Power Drive XL Loaded Front Light comes in. Sure, Lezyne makes 1000 lumen lights like the Mega Drive, but those lights feature much of the same functionality, only with a higher output that's not as suitable for the road as it is for the trail. So, if you need a light that's as versatile on the trail as it is for commuting, the Power Drive XL answers the call.

The most obvious difference between the Power Drive XL and other lights is the CNC-machined aluminum body. In the event that you take a spill (not hard to do on a trail at night), the Power Drive can handle it. The machined aluminum body also dissipates heat, which has a tendency to damage Li-ion batteries over time. And for the sake of being real, it also looks really good. You might downplay the importance of style, but let's face it, you don't want to hang some cheap, plastic gumball-machine headlight on your carbon race machine. The Power Drive now has a redesigned power button that increases the headlight's water- and weather-resistance. How? Well, the new power button hides the Green and Red LEDs that allow you to monitor battery level without losing a pedal stroke. When the headlight is on, the indicator (located on top of the light housing) will be either Green, Red, or flashing Red to indicate power level.

Lezyne's Infinite Light feature is another innovation that adds versatility and usability for endurance riders, 24-hour racers, or anyone planning to out-ride the battery's burn time. But, if you burn out your battery, just pop it out and slide in a fully-charged Li-ion. It sounds simple, but it's a rare feature among trail lights. Additionally, it allows you to ride as long as you want, depending on the number of backup-batteries that you decide to carry. Battery conservation is further enhanced through the new Standard and Race mode features. Basically, selecting either mode allows the light to optimize power for the ride setting.

Another trail-enhancing innovation is Lezyne's Constant Current technology. Constant Current delivers even and constant lumen output over the entire life of the battery without any dimming or fading out as the battery loses charge. This feature increases efficiency in order to allow the Power Drive to burn brighter and longer. The Power Drive is also equipped with Lezyne's Maximum Optical Reflection one-piece internal reflection technology. The result is a light with fewer parts and a smoother, wider, and uniform power beam.

The Power Drive has four modes: Blast (400 lumens), Enduro (250 lumens), Flash (250 lumens), and Economy (125 lumens). The battery is good for 2 hours, 3 hours, 5.5 hours, and 5.5 hours in each mode, respectively. Lezyne's side visibility technology also makes the Power Drive visible from 180 degrees at night without illuminating your handlebars, which can be distracting.

It includes an Li-ion rechargeable battery, a USB charger, and a Composite Matrix handlebar mount that fits both 25.4 and 31.8mm bars. And with the Fully Loaded package, Lezyne is also throwing in a Composite Matrix helmet mount and a spare Li-ion battery. Lezyne estimates that a full battery-recharge takes around five hours, and the light tips the scales around 140 grams without any mounting hardware.

It is the following according to Lezyne: LIR 18650 Lithium Ion rechargeable battery for use in the Power Drive and Super Drive LED lights. SPEC: 2400 mAh, 3.7V, 2Amp.

2nd Gen of these lights still wonky...

  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

Leyzene tends to pride themselves on the ultra-design execution of their products, so I was interested w their light offerings. I got one of their XL series lights, mostly because it takes a non-proprietary battery. So if your light starts to dim, throw another in. Most systems require you hustle home quickly if that happens, but I just have to carry a relatively small extra battery in the caddy they provide, and I am set!

All well and good, but a couple of immediate hiccups: the batteries provided must be from a bad batch -one wouldn't take a charge, and the other only a partial (and I metered and charged w various source methods when the first wouldn't take). Bummer, because I called both BC, and sister-site Competitive Cyclist to see if they had the newer versions shown at last year's interbike show. No one could give me a specific answer, but if you look at the copy photo -they are the newer versions (w a spring behind the battery for better performance). The pictures here show a silver and black option, but the silver pic is actually the Super Drive. Okay, batteries suck, 2400 maH too (could be higher capacity for the price, availability!). So I have sent them back, and have yet to receive new ones!!! They were apologetic, yes, but confirming bad batts was like pulling teeth. I had to put one of my own 18650 battery in just to test the light! Anyway, nice beam, button bit hard to push (if on bike this would present a problem) between the modes. I have 502b flashlights that are almost identical in architecture, and the mode switching is MUCH better. The 'Loaded' kit comes with that awesome extra battery, helmet mount, and an extra bar mount w/o cinch bolt -now that's just cutting too many corners. The threading for the cap is so fine, that taking it on and off is a skill all its own. Cross-threading could become a problem if not careful. So, all added up: Leyzene did not live up to its ultra-design self-title. This is its 2nd gen of these lights also!
