Built for life.

Yes, by now, we're all familiar with the joke about guys, cargo shorts, and 'Nam. However, the joke never mentioned cargo pants, nor did it mention the absolute convenience of cargo pockets while in the saddle. And while we understand the laughter directed towards massive pants with pockets for pockets' sake, the new Levi's Commuter Cargo Pants shatter this mold. In fact, these pants feature a slim fit, both a sanitized and protective finish, and thankfully, no carpenter's hook for ghosts of hammers past.

These aren't some run-of-the-mill, one-off attempt at appeasing a subculture. Instead, Levi's worked closely with cyclists in multiple cities around America, distributing prototypes and accepting feedback. And, as a result of developing the pants in accordance to critique, Levi's effectively dialed-in the fit, accoutrements, and finishes to what cyclists are actually asking for.

Accordingly, Levi's adapted its slim-fit cargo pants to the purpose of cycling. The Commuter Cargos feature a water-resistant and dirt-repellent NanoSphere protective finish to make commuting in hostile weather a little more acceptable, especially if your destination is the office. It's for this very reason that Levi's also incorporated an odor-resistant Sanitized finish to the pants, too. Levi's also made these pants perfect for trips where your bag is staying at home by installing a U-lock holster along the rear of the waistband. This way, you're not ramming your lock down your pants, wearing out your belt, or being forced to wear a fanny-pack -- you're grown man after all.

In terms of durability, Levi's double-layered the seat panel and the rear pockets. Additionally, the crotch of the Cargo is gusseted in order to resist tearing and saddle abrasion. In terms of fit, it's important to note that Levi's considers the Cargo as a slim-fit pair of pants. They sit slightly below the waist and feature a slim, slightly tapered leg. However, for the sake of coverage while in the saddle, these Cargos have been cut higher in the rear than a standard pair.

For the pockets, these trousers have been given slash front pockets, like a chino, with built-in stretch webbing at the corners. Meanwhile, the rear pockets feature a welted design, and the legs have cargo pockets that end right above the knee. And to increase your visibility to motorists in low-light conditions, Levi's incorporated reflective 3M Scotchlite tape on the interior of the pant's cuffs.

The Levi's Commuter Cargo Pants are available in the colors Black and Tobacco and in the sizes 29x30, 30x30, 31x32, 32x32, 33x32, 34x32, 34x34, 36x32, and 38x32.

Nice pants, poor description

  • Gender:Male
  • Familiarity:I've used it several times
  • Fit:True to size

I found the sizing to be accurate and the fabric appears to be durable. A few things buyers should know, however:

1. The crotch is NOT gusseted. It's a plain ol' straight seam crotch.

2. Cargo pockets are basically useless due to placement on top of thigh. Terrible place to put something. Not only is it impossible to retrieve something from it when your knee is bent, but it also pushes the object into your thigh which is really uncomfortable. Had they actually done research they would have figured this out in the first round.

3. There is no U-lock holster.

Basically, they are decent pants with the most inaccurate description ever.

Great commuters

Great pants! They are Levis so the build quality of these pants is very high plus you know if you run into issues Levis will take care of them for you. I like the cargo pockets on the thigh. I don't like riding with headphones in especially when commuting to the thigh pocket is a fantastic place to put my phone and put my music on speaker.

I usually wear a 33x34 in Levis so I was surprised when the even the 34 felt a bit tight. I would say these are a very slim fit. I ended wearing a 34x32.

Runs Tight

These are exceptionally well put together; they looked absolutely built to last, designed for optimal functionality on the bike with casual style off the bike. Well worth the money for a product that is well thought out and manufactured to withstand the abuse of every day commuting.

Although the material and design were impressive, they Levi's slim fit just proved to slim for me. Size up if you're in between sizes.

    Don't breath...

    • Familiarity:I returned this product before using it

I really like the styling on these pants (though my wife thinks they look too hipster/feminine - with the front cargo pockets)... but they are soooo non-ventilating. I mean, you will overheat if the temp is more than 75. My legs & butt got immediately clammy after trying them on. Material is very tough - and construction is great. So, a cool winter pant for young hipsters with beards.

    Classy and functional

    • Familiarity:I've used it several times

I really like these pants. The one thing I would change is the snap closure. I'd prefer a button. But they look great (go ahead, dress them up) and they're super comfy.

    dope pants

    • Familiarity:I've used it several times

Really cool. I love the cargo pockets. Took these out on the fixed gear in a downpour and only my butt was soaked. But they dry super fast. Look awesome rolled up. You pretty much can wear them with anything. On the back there is a weird pocket above the butt pocket that I stick my phone in if i'm really riding. Seriously awesome pants, pick them up!

    Style changed :(

    • Gender:Male

I second PRO12B's review. The (newer) "Olive Jungle" and "Graphite" has a different pocket styling, thinner material and doesn't seem as rugged as the (older) "Tobacco" and "Black". Compare the pictures above.

Sizing was consistent on all. I have a 29" waist, 21.75 quads and the size 30 fits great.

I returned the newer and gave it 3 stars. I like the older version better. Water-proofing is awesome. Water just beads on the surface and wipes dry after a 30-minute rain ride.

The old cargo style is coming back in June 2015 :)

I am hooked on Levi's commuter line!

I changed out most of all my casual jeans & pants to Levi's commuter line because of the comfort, style, function and the fit. I have the Black and Tobacco cargo pants which they discontinued so can't talk about the current line but previous model is sweet. This material is ticker than other Levi's Commuter line pants so not as stretchy and because of cargo-pocket placement it does limit your mobility…I wear size 32 in norm pants but in Levi's commuter line I like the fit of size 33…it's slim fit!

    Unanswered Question

Curious to know how the cuff works on these pants. I've seen some photos that show them rolled up, with a reflective material on the inside cuff. But given that these pants have snap-on cinching thing, wouldn't it make them hard to roll-up? I hate pants that can't be rolled up or hemmed (which I suspect could be the case here, but I hope not because they look amazing).

Im confused about the sizing . is 34x36...

Im confused about the sizing . is 34x36 for example, inches? is it the leg/waist measurement, and if so which is which?

    Responded on

So the sizing for this is in inches.

In the case of the 34x36 the first set of numbers is for the waist measurement (34) and the second set of numbers is the inseam length (36)

    Hope this helps!

    Best pants I've ever owned

    • Familiarity:I've put it through the wringer

So I bought these with hiking and style in mind and boy do they live up to my expectations. They look amazing and are so comfortable and the pockets are extremely handy. The waterproofing is also much better than expected. They run a bit small but I bought my normal size and after the first wear they fit like a glove. Thank you Levi's!

    Huge man thighs won't fit

    • Familiarity:I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
    • Fit:Runs small

The sizing is really messed up. Ordered them big, still can't even fit my thighs in the pants. Not for people with large legs.

    Responded on

My thighs fit but the positioning of the cargo pockets constricts any access once my leg is bent. The pocket entrances need to be a bit bigger to permit room beyond your leg volume.

    Stylish commuter pant

Bought these for my son who rides his BMX daily. They certainly run small but he loves the stylish look and functionality. If you plan on buying these to wear for commuters, I would recommend buying a size up.

Cycling pants? Hardly. No stretch in the crotch means getting a leg up on the saddle is a wrestling match. What's more, the fabric tightened when I did put my leg up over the saddle. Two months of occasional use, and I had put a hole in either leg at the upper inside corner of the cargo pocket because the non-stretch of the fabric was pulling tight there every time I put a leg up.

Two months of use, and the pants exploded with a 1-foot tear at that weak point. I rode home with my underwear blowing in the breeze.

    Responded on

The exact thing happened to me. Fortunately I was at home when mine exploded from simply bending over to pick something up.

    Awesome pants

    • Familiarity:I've put it through the wringer

These are incredible pants. I live in Chicago and ride year round and have been searching for great pants I can wear on my daily commute to work. In the past month I have worn these pants almost daily and I'm impressed by the following characteristics:

Material. These guys are tough and warm without being bulky. Water beads off and I think they will last a long time.

Features. I love the reflectors inside the pant legs, additional reflectors at the corner of each rear pocket, and the snaps at the cuff of the legs. Also the small strip of rubber sewn into the left cargo pocket is genius for keeping my phone inside the pocket while pedaling. And the slightly tailored knees make pedaling much more comfortable than regular pants.

It's obvious that Levi's did their homework here, and in my opinion these pants are a home run.

    Wanted to love.

These look awesome, and the fit is great. They were my new favorite pant... but the action of climbing on and off the bike tore holes in both legs right where the cargo pockets come to a corner. The gusseted crotch wasn't wide enough, so the pants pulled tight on my thighs whenever I put a leg over the saddle.

This stretched them tight and eventually tore the holes. Not cyclist approved. I'm in great shape so it wasn't me.

Oh well. Too bad I didn't buy them from Backcountry- I could have returned them!

    Responded on

Crazy, I've been using these hard for 6 months and no blow-outs.

Normally, I don't go for cargos... but Levi's nailed it here.

The cargos feature a slimmed down fit that doesn't make you look like you just walked out of the Army/Navy store and the beefed up fabric/stitching make these great for wear and tear on the bike or in the shop.

The cargo pockets are also smaller than I was expecting and positioned for easy access when pedaling.

Super durable fabric and water resistant coating also make these great for camping, climbing or winter weather.

Id recommend these as the slim alternative to 'Mountain Khakis'
