Description

Live, work, and ride.

Sure, you tear up the tarmac after work, but Levi's want to know why you're not riding everywhere, all of the time? Yes, we're referring to the two words that strike fear into the hearts of all Lycra-coveting man on earth -- bicycle commuting. Perhaps you've tried in the past, and perhaps your momentary feeling of accomplishment was crushed by sneers directed towards your cycling kit? Trust us, whether it be at the liquor store or the office, we've all experienced that 'huh?' look. Enter the Levi's Commuter 511 Trousers. Finally, you're able to ride, work, and live in one pair of pants.

These aren't some run-of-the-mill, one-off attempt at appeasing a subculture. Instead, Levi's worked closely with cyclists in multiple cities around America, distributing prototypes and accepting feedback. And, as a result of developing the pants in accordance to critique, Levi's effectively dialed-in the fit, accoutrements, and finishes to what cyclists are actually asking for.

Accordingly, Levi's adapted its slim-fit 511s to the purpose of cycling. The Commuter 511s feature a water-resistant and dirt-repellent NanoSphere protective finish to make commuting in hostile weather a little more acceptable, especially if your ending destination is the office. It's for this very reason that Levi's also incorporated an odor-resistant Sanitized finish to the pants, too. Levi's also made these pants perfect for trips where your bag is staying at home by installing a U-lock holster along the rear of the waistband. This way, you're not ramming your lock down your pants, wearing out your belt, or being forced to wear a fanny-pack -- you're grown man after all.

In terms of durability, Levi's double-layered the seat panel and the rear pockets. Additionally, the crotch of the 511 is gusseted in order to resist tearing and saddle abrasion. In terms of fit, it's important to note that Levi's considers the 511 as a slim-fit pair of pants. They sit slightly below the waist and feature a skinny, slightly tapered leg. However, for the sake of coverage while in the saddle, these 511s have been cut higher in the rear than a standard pair.

For the pockets, these trousers have been given slashed front pockets, like a chino, with built-in stretch webbing at the corners. Meanwhile, the rear pockets feature a welted design. And to increase your visibility to motorists in low-light conditions, Levi's incorporated reflective 3M Scotchlite tape on the interior of the pant's cuffs.

The Levi's Commuter 511 Trousers are available in the colors Black and Harvest Gold and in the sizes 30x30, 31x32, 32x30, 32x32, 33x32, 34x32, 36x32, and 38x32.

GOAT IS GOOD

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

Bought and liked the Levi 504s (read my review there) so tried these too. Seem to have all the attributes (including fit) of the 504s I like. Here’s what I think you need to know about the 511. These are trousers, not jeans so no five pocket, or rivets or patch pockets on the rear. They are sturdy material in the construction so will take more abuse than most pairs of khakis I’m familiar with (save for Mountain khakis perhaps). If the modern, slimmer fit works for you (I think they fit much like the 504 jeans) and you need something a little different or more work appropriate, these would be the ticket. My only complaint, the stitching for the double layer in the seat panel is pretty noticeable (visible) in the light color pants (e.g. tan/khaki). I have black and you have to look for it to notice the stitching on it and the other dark colors from what I recall. I just saw they are on sale—I may pull the trigger and get another color.

A little too tight

  • Gender: Male
  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
  • Fit: Runs small

Pretty much what I wanted in terms material but I'm not a big of fan of tight leg jeans. I expected a little bagginess to it. The title should mention these are slim fit. I did notice after the fact that it's in the box description but other jeans are listed with "Slim Fit Denim" in the title

Just too good

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit: True to size

I just bought two more of these after having beaten my first pair to a pulp. These can be worn in almost any situation, dressed up, dressed down, dressed sideways. Yes, even to bed. They are durable, incredibly comfortable, and look like a million bucks. The deep pockets let you carry what you need.

Get a few colors, and you won't have to own another pair of pants in your life.

Must Try

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: True to size

If you haven't tried these pants, you really should. They're a great mix of comfort and style, and just formal enough to be worn for most occasions. They have a really nice slim cut that looks very good, but is not overly aggressive so most "average" to slim guys will be able to pull it off. Super thick legs may want to look to the 504 style... but I'd say I have moderately hefty legs and I still love these. I got my first pair two weeks ago, and just came back to order a second pair.

I'm 6' 190lbs and a consistent 34x32. The 34x32 fits me perfectly, like a glove. They're definitely fairly tight, when first putting them on I thought they were too tight and almost returned them. After settling in a bit though, they are great. Best fit I've got from a pant without going to a tailor.

Another new favorite!

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit: True to size

After getting a few pairs of the 511 commuter jeans, I tried out these trousers and love them just as much! Can even dress them up and get away with them at that fancy dinner you didn't want to go to anyway. But, yet still durable for a day in the dirt. Comfortable, well made, and long lasting.

Great pants but are thick

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: True to size

These pants are awesome. Everything from the fit to the tech on these jeans is well placed and perfect. The U-lock holder is a bit tough while wearing a backpack but works great. The extra stitching on the crotch is a phenomenal feature. The reflective strips on the inside are neat and otherwise, unhindering. These things are champs in light rain. And best of all, these pants stretch a bit, just enough to allow for easy riding.
That being said, my only problem with these jeans is that they are thick. I guess all these toughening features cause the jeans to gain some width and they loose breathability. For someone whom has an exceptionally hilly commute everyday, I heat up REALLY fast. And the low breathability causes me to take a while to cool back down. This should come in handy as it gets colder but for right now, it's a bit of a bummer.

Need to add a touch of class?

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

These will do the job. Great, simple, slim fit to them, but not too tight like those skinny jeans we rocked in high school... Been looking for something I can wear when dressing up a little, but not feel like I'd ruin them on a night out and these definitely fit the bill. Nice strong material that takes a few days of wear to break in, but once worn, are super comfy. Great attention to detail on them as well- from simple things like the stitching, or color of the pocket interiors to more noticeable details, like the lock holster and reflective highlights on the cuffs. Wish they were a little bit longer so that I could cuff them without looking like highwaters, but, I mean, I'm kinda tall and slender anyway, so sometimes we gotta take what we can get. Hell, they impressed my lady and the judge, so they're a win in my book!

Timberwolf are longer than the rest

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit: True to size

Beware: the Timberwolf color runs longer than the Harvest Gold. Harvest Gold fit very true to size. Overall, great commuter/business casual work trousers. Pockets in the back are more formal than jeans - great feature.

Durable

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit: True to size

Long lasting pants. The reinforced crotch is a great feature on this biking pants. The reflector in the cuff is useful in case you forget your lights or just want to be more visible while riding at night. Also, these pants are semi waterproof. Very nice if you caught in bad weather. All around good. The sizing is similar to other Levi's pants.

Suffer for Fashion

All I wear are Levi's 511. But, I'm disappointed in the commuter trouser. Unless, I bought a defected pair. The waist fits fine but they're way too tight in the grundage area. It seems the construction is a bit off. I might buy another pair just to see if they fit differently. Considering my complaints, I still wear them quite a bit. Because, they're functional and look good.

wow. thats all i can say

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I've worn these basically every other day since I bought them. Really comfortable and feel great for lounging around and trying to steal wifi, but also extremely durable when you're out and about on your bike. Levi's made the crotch bomb proof, so say goodbye to biking issues. They fit wonderful as well, the classic 511 fit spot on. Sizing is true to Levi's sizing. I wear a size 32 in most Levi's and the 32 in these is perfect. Buy them, you will not be disappointed!

Great Pants! Wish they'd restock them!

Love these, keep trying to find more pairs but hard to come by. Great fit, durable material. My new favorite pants!

Great all around pant

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit: True to size

I bought a pair of these guys last year and recently doubled down on another. The Commuters are true to the 511 cut (skinny) so if you've worn a pair before, these will fit the same way, but better. The high back, reinforced seat, and slim legs make riding comfortable and the reflective cuffs are a nice bonus (how well it actually protects you is up for debate, i personally have yet to be side swiped by a car and would like to keep it that way).

As for wearing to work, the Commuters are great due to the trouser-esque back pockets. They wear like a trendier pair of dockers.

The water-repellent coating makes these pants my first choice for casual hikes and climbing. They wick a light sprinkle away nicely but do get soaked through for anything heavier. These are not technical dry-fit pants by any means but are great for light hikes when you know you may hit the bar afterwards and don't want to look like an outdoor wonk.

All said and done, these pants do it all.
