Description

The start of something good.

Other than the flamboyant fluo of your kit, does anything more strongly define your physical appearance than your helmet? For our gear, we prefer the road less traveled, or in more definitive terms, an optimal blend of fashionable, functional, slightly-esoteric pro'ness. So, basically, the ubiquity of the gear often turns us off, and accordingly, we crave a different helmet. But, it still has to meet or beat the upsides of the iconoclasts. That's where the Lazer Genesis Helmet makes its mark.

Esoteric pro'ness: The Lazer Genesis Helmet has it. But what about the other critical variables for a helmet -- fit, function, and handsomeness? Ditto here -- the Genesis has it in spades. In terms of fit, the best part about the Genesis is that it only comes in two sizes that Lazer refers to as Medium and Large. The former is for head circumferences ranging from 52cm - 58cm, and the latter is for 58cm - 61cm heads. Here's some practical advice: If you're comfortable in a size Medium Giro, you'll want the Medium Lazer. If the Medium Giro feels too small in the least, you'll want to size up to the Large.

How does Lazer get away with only two sizes? It's thanks to its patented Rollsys Retention System technology. Unlike the other designs that basically press a retention system onto the back of your head, the Lazer Rollsys has a smooth thumb wheel at the top of the helmet that connects to a progressive sizing system that loosens/tightens the retention system around the entire circumference of your head. Design-wise, the Rollsys is remarkably clean, and it adds no appreciable weight to the helmet. Those who've worn them are astonished by the same thing -- the comfort of having retention pressure increased/decreased evenly throughout the entirety of the helmet.

The Genesis Helmet has 19 generous vents for ample ventilation, and a more minimal silhouette than other helmets, as though it's not as tall and not as wide. We like that. It also relies on X-Static pads to keep you comfortable, and to keep it from getting too stinky. This material is also anti-microbial to discourage bacterial and fungal growth.

The Lazer Genesis Helmet is available in the sizes Medium and Large and in the colors Black/white, Blue/white, Flash Yellow, Matte Black, Matte Black/red, Matte White, Red/white, and Silver/white. It comes with a helmet bag and a spare set of X-Static pads, although you can remove the pads included in the helmet and wash them to freshen it up as part of your regular maintenance.

No dome head here

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I discovered lazer helmets this year after wearing nothing but Giro for last 15 yrs. The lazers sit much closer to your head. If you were to measure someones height from ground to top of helmet wearing a giro they would be taller. Don't know how else to describe other than this helmet is less bulk and more round around your head. Less "point" to it on top of your head. So far fit and finish are comparable to giro. Nice solid straps also.

Lazer Genesis

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

Good lid. I like the fit and style, a bit on the heavy side compared to my LAS. I use it primarily for CX racing and dirt road riding.

Gutter

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I've always had to wear a hat bc.I sweat a ton. At CrossVegas this year I put this lid on without a hat (It was dark) and I didn’t have any problems. Fits really well too. Only downside is the weight. My Giro is much lighter.

Good lid. I use it for cyclocross and XC racing/riding. Retention system works well.

so far good

I really like how the tightener is easy to use when you are on the bike and it feels like it pulls more than just a tight band around your head. I rode the new york gran fondo. the weather was freezing so i had other discomfort, but i think the helmet is going to be great.
great customer service from backcountry.

Great helmet!

I have a pretty big Asian head so its very hard to find a low profile helmet that fits me well. I came from using a Specialized Echelon and this helmet looks 110% better. When considering helmet upgrades, I had my eyes on the S-Works Prevail and the Giro Aeon but both looked ridiculously bulbous on my head (I wear a size large for both helmets). The Prevail looked slightly better than the Aeon but it was bulbous all the same. The Lazer Genesis has a great low profile on my head and don't feel embarrassed about walking around with a helmet anymore. My only complaint is the weight, which is definitely a lot more than most higher end helmets. I guess you could argue that their unique buckle system is partially to blame. The other option would be to get the Helium which is slightly lighter than the Genesis but is more bulbous in appearance due to the fact that Lazer wanted to have larger vents on the helmet. In then end, I went with the Genesis because the ventilation was pretty much the same between the two; the Genesis clearly wins on aesthetics between the two.
