Description

No corners cut.

Longtime cycling footwear staple Lake has considerable experience building race-worthy kicks, and the CX217 Shoes illustrate that the focus on pro-level equipment doesn’t have to come at the expense of value. Employing many of the lessons learned from the top-tier CX402, the CX217 employs a refined carbon fiber sole, topped with a Competition last that’s built to channel every last watt straight into your pedals — without giving up the comfort you need to drop the hammer all day long.

The key to the CX217’s power transfer lies in Lake’s Competition last. Like the moldable CFC last used in the CX402, the Competition last is designed to focus your power output into the ball of your foot, and straight through to the pedal. And while efficiency is key, there’s added room in the toe box to allow for foot expansion under hard efforts. The result is that you don’t have to sacrifice a comfortable fit in the pursuit of a highly efficient shoe.

The BOA closure has been quickly adopted by the pro ranks due to the fact that it offers easy fine-tuning, and it stays tight throughout your entire ride. It’s highly effective at keeping your heel locked down, without requiring excess pressure. And as you probably know, that means better bloodflow and greater comfort. The BOA closure runs underneath an action leather upper, which has been enhanced with mesh panels to maximize foot-cooling airflow.

The Lake CX217 Shoes - Men's are available in whole and half sizes, from 39 to 47, plus whole sizes 48 and 50, and in the color White/black. All sizes are also available in the Wide option.

Great Shoes For Wide Feet

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I never had problem buying a pair of shoes until I started shopping for road cycling shoes. I have tried various shoe brands including Shimano, Sidi, Northwave, Mavic, Specialized, Giro, Pearl Izumi, and Bonts and none of them would fit me properly. I have narrow heels, high instep and probably average width toe area so most shoes that I have tried were not wide enough. Lake shoes seem not only run true to size, but also have accommodating forefoot area. The BOA system requires some time getting used to because it is very easy to over tight the shoes. Probably having two enclosures would be better for fine tuning, but even a single system works great. Overall, I'm pretty happy with these shoes and their performance.

Wanted to like them

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

Well made upper, stiff sole. Upper is well ventilated. I needed a shoe with a little extra width and these have it. Perhaps a little too much room in the toes. Combine that with the single Boa and I am constantly adjusting these shoes on a ride, I just cannot get comfortable. If I tighten them down, the top of my foot is pinched but my toes are nice and snug. If I loosen them my toes bang around as I go over bumps in the road as if they were in a pinball machine. I should have bought a shoe with a more standard velcro and ratcheting strap closure system. I've been riding them all spring summer hoping that they would "break in" and all of a sudden become comfortable. Hasn't happened.

5 stars for the upper and the sole, minus 3 stars for the closure system.
