Wide open.

Among cycling shoe manufacturers, few names have been as supportive of the wide-foot crowd as Lake. As evidence for this assertion, we present the Dutch firm's Wide line, which is the exact same as the standard shoes with an added "wide" designation. So cyclists with wider metatarsals and heels can enjoy about 15mm more width while still netting the benefits of kit like Lake's mid-range workhorse, the men's CX237 Wide Shoes.

The key to the CX237s' power transfer lies in Lake’s Competition last. Like the moldable CFC last used in the CX331, the Competition last is designed to focus your power output into the ball of your foot, and straight through to the pedal. And while efficiency is key, there’s added room in the toe box to allow for foot expansion under hard efforts. It all rests on Lake’s stiff Race carbon fiber sole. The result is a comfortable fit, packaged in a highly efficient shoe.

The dual Boa closure has been quickly adopted by the professional ranks due to the fact that it offers easy fine-tuning, and it stays tight throughout your entire ride. And since you’re able to independently adjust tension on the forefoot and the heel, you can lock down your heel, without having to over-tighten the rest of the shoe. As you probably know, that means better bloodflow and greater comfort. The Boa closure runs underneath the full-grain leather upper, enhanced with mesh panels to maximize foot-cooling airflow.

  • Carbon fiber sole
  • Boa closure system
  • Full-grain leather upper
  • 15mm wider than regular width CX237

This is the shoe I've been looking for!

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit: True to size
  • Size Bought: 46

I am particular about my feet, especially when it comes to comfort. Seems most cycle shoes are way to narrow or too stiff for me to last more than one or two uncomfortable hours in, so the softness of of the shoe plus the extra width made for the shoe I have been looking for, making me a lifetime Lake customer. I have used these all summer while training for a double century, and wore them during the double century, and my feet have never been happier. Also, wore them also in a major thunderstorm where they got totally soaked, didn't hurt them a bit. Love the boa closure system too.

Big disappointment

  • Fit: True to size

While the wide fit was real the very thin tongue made for uncomfortable riding. Worse however was the fact that the external heel pads wore thin within a MONTH, with very little walking (only in car park, briefly at rest stops) such that both the carbon soles and even the leather on the heel got scuffed and damaged. Lake admitted that the heel pad was too fine and that the 2017 model would fix that. They offered to send me replacement heel pads (which would require removing the exiting riveted ones), but never sent them. They refused any credit or exchanges and did not reply to follow-up emails. Fortunately Backcountry came through and offered me store credit

Best Cycling Shoe

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: True to size
  • Size Bought: 43

Been cycling my whole life. Went through many brands, many styles. I have a wide foot, but not Sasquatch - just an E width. Began to think that hot foot was something I'd have to bear my whole life, until I started riding with Lake CX 237. They are true to size and roomy enough in the toe box to prevent pain. In addition, the Boa closure system is fantastic. As I ride and my feet swell, it's so simple to just pop up the lock, wiggle my feet to get a little more room, and pop the snap the lock back down. Absolutely the best shoe ever.

Love Lakes

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: True to size
  • Size Bought: 45.5 Wide

This is my 4th pair of lake shoes, I have 402s and 331s I won't get into the long story but I bought these to have a dual boa shoe that is not as hard core as the 402s and I expected them to be the same quality as the 331s at least but the 237s don't look or feel like real leather, especially the tongue, it looks and feels like it's synthetic. Now that said they are true to size like all Lakes and wide does mean WIDE I would say EE at least. In all fairness I have not liked any pair of lakes when they were brand new (especially the 402s) but after a little time they are the most comfortable cycle shoes I think you can buy. Just do them a favor and do not take them out of the box the first time put them on walk around your living room carpet and judge them (especially the 402s)
