Item # KUA0003

Kuat's best rack for hauling downhill and other large bikes.

Transporting your big rigs requires a beefy rack like the Kuat NV 2 Bike Rack. This burly bike rack hold them in place as you speed through several states toward dirty downhill freedom. The front and back tire-ratcheting design secures 20 to 29-inch wheels and leaves 13 inches between bikes to protect your components.

Kuat's chassis design takes into account all the little details to make your big bike party a breeze. The fold-up frame prevents rattling and damage on bumpy dirty roads and tilts downward for access to your vehicle's trunk. The hand-tight cam system makes for easy loading and unloading and a built-in repair stand permits pre-ride maintenance and post-ride clean-up.

For big bike party trips an add-on is available (sold separately and for two-inch version only) for extending the NV's capacity to four bikes. Integrated cable lock keeps your prized machines from getting jacked at random late-night truck-stops.

  • Two versions: one to fit two-inch hitch receivers, and one to fit 1.25-inch receivers
  • Folds up to reduce profile when not in use
  • Built-in repair stand
  • Integrated cable lock
  • Extensions to add two more bikes are available separately

New model means this one on sale!

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

New (to me) vehicle means new bike hauler. I've got lots of experience with hitch and roof mount bike racks. I've avoided buying the NV in the past due to price of entry. But with the new NV 2.0 out putting the prior model (the one I'm reviewing) on closeout/sale, I couldn't resist. The expansion gizmo in the receiver makes for a tight fit (maybe less wobble than the yakima holdup hitch rack I had?). The front tire holder works on all my bikes EXCEPT those with fenders (not that I need to transport my fendered bike to the trailhead or race--its for commuting). And when I say the NV fits all my bikes--I've gotten 27+, 29er, 29+ and fat bikes (up to 4.8" tires) on this rack. With the fat bikes, I need to enlist the help of some rubberized ski straps to hold the rear wheel (the NV straps won't make it around a monster fat tire and uber wide rim). You could also use a bungee cord, velcro strap or spring for the Kuat Phat strap extenders to do the same thing. FYI--the new NV got plus sized compatible so I think it accommodates big tires without add-on doo-dads. Although I can't speak to durability, my buddy has several years on his NV and it looks pretty good and functions well with minimal (none?) maintenance and his rack lives on his vehicle year round. I think the NV looks better than my Yakima Holdup and the bike stand feature of the NV has proven useful on more than one occasion, otherwise, function is very similar. If there is a negative to the NV (and the Yakima or Thule T2 for that matter), its weight and bulk. They are all heavy/bulky to pull on/off your car and store. If money is no object, look at the 1UP line of hitch racks (if my budget were bigger, that's where I'd go--USA made, all aluminum and light, folds for trunk storage). But this on-sale NV hauls 2 bikes for the cost of a single bike 1UP.

Great Rack

After having a Thule T2 Classic rack, the Kuat emerged as easier to use - love the tilt feature to get into the back of the SUV too. It's sturdy and stable.

    Hard to beat

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

The best rack I've used. Holds bikes snug and has a couple nice added features such as tilt (to access your trunk) and the built in repair stand.

    Best rack we've owned

Other racks we've owned are a hassle to use and scrape up our bikes over time. This rack is easy to use, and doesn't damage our bikes. The tilt feature is key if you need to access your back door and bikes are loaded on the rack. Highly recommend.

So Good Minus the Locking Feature

      • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I have a Rav4 and was sick of throwing my bike on my roof rack so I snagged this based on the reviews. It had about 90 some reviews when I bought it and now over 100, but figured I'd throw in my $0.02 as a use it consistently four days a week. I am currently rocking a large Ibis Mojo 3 with 2.5"/2.4" tires and no issues on that.

      Pros:
      - Pretty easy to assemble, despite some people complaining about it being complicated. I grabbed a beer and finished the rack before I finished my beer.
      - As a whole, the rack does feel very solid. It's made of metal, and feels like it. The racks do wobble a touch, though I wouldn't fear for the bikes and most of the time I fear not for any rub between two bikes.
      - Especially if you have a carbon bike, no frame contact is key and this does that exactly.
      - The Kuat Sherpa rack has some issues with bikes with a long wheelbase, nothing of the sort here for the NV 2. No bike has been an issue in terms of wheelbase, my Mojo 3 can run up to a 2.8" and I think that there wouldn't be any issue with that wide of a tire.
      - The built in bike stand is cool, but has seen little to no action. Insert what joke you'd about that last sentence here..

      Cons:
-Not sure who the genius was that gave the A-OK for the length of the cable lock, but it barely squeezes together with two bikes on and definitely not through any frames. I know a cable lock is not theft proof by any means, but semi jaded that they couldn't have extended it by 6" and it would have been perfect.

      ROCK SOLID

      • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

The Kuat NV is rock solid! I have had my NV for a couple years now and have no regrets. I recently drove cross-country and never had to worry about my bike because of how secure and stable the NV is. The hitch bearing eliminates any play the rack might have within your vehicles receiver and the built in cable lock gives you peace of mind knowing your bike is secure.
After living in Utah this past winter the salt on the roads caused my lock to seize up. The Kuat customer service was excellent and they sent my a new replacement within a few days. Overall great rack!!!

      incompatible parts

      • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

I bought the KUAT NV 2.0 1 1/4 on sale after noticing that a 1.25 to 2.0 adapter. Well the adaptor sold here only works with the sherpa not the NV 2.0. Then I went to kuat.com and ordered the NV 1.25 to 2.0 which still did not fit. It turns out that the NV 1.25 to 2.0 converter only works with the older NV not the NV 2.0. So now I have to buy a $149 replacement mount arm if I want it to work or send the whole thing back for refund. What a pain in the you know what.

After receiving and installing the mount arm. I noticed that the plastic clamps for the bike clamp are broken. Let's see if I can get a replacement from KUAT.

      Maximum convenience

      • Familiarity: I've used it several times

Love not having to worry about bikes on the roof or fiddling with straps or adapters or taking the bikes off to access the trunk. Well worth the money to get a platform hitch rack. Was worried about rattling with the 1.25 but it's completely silent. 10/10 would buy again.

Great Rack at a Great Price

Kuat makes killer racks, they are really raising the bar. This rack holds all kind of bikes without damaging the paint, or, cables. It also holds the bikes nice and level, which is great for gas millage.

Spend a little more, go Kuat. Or, in this case, snag them up while they are on sale!

*prob not the best for fatbikes

What is the weight limit on this rack?

Hi Evelyne, The max carrying capacity on the NV 2.0 is 60lbs. Please reach out to me directly with any other questions you may have. - Matthew Pizza - Expert Gearhead

        Not Sure Yet...

Received my rack...so stoked! Started to assemble. That is where my love affair ends. My rack was missing 1 bolt and 3 locknuts. Looks like my family and I will NOT be biking this weekend. Messaged Kuat regarding parts, still have not heard back (disappointing)

          One use and I'm SOLD.

          • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

I've only used the rack once so far and already know this was the right purchase. It's easy to put together and holds the bikes solid. Nice to have some peace of mind knowing that the bikes are snug and sturdy. Excellent purchase.

Is this the NV 2.0 or the regular NV? The photos and the MSRP are of the regular NV. You can tell as the NV 2.0 has a foot pedal at the pivot point where the NV doesn't as displayed in the attached picture. Also, the MSRP of the NV 2.0 is $629. Which NV will I be getting if I purchase this product?

          Thanks

Hey Mark - This is not the NV 2.0, we do not have the 2.0 in stock yet. This is the original NV 2 model. Feel free to contact me directly with any additional questions.

          Works better than expected

          • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I have used several similar racks but this is really nice. My bikes don't move, don't touch, and I have peace of mind. It's so easy to put on the car and put bikes on and off. Great rack!
