A Pearl in rough terrain.

The Juliana Joplin Carbon S is built with the exact same geometry and suspension platform that has made its brother, the Santa Cruz Tallboy, such a giant in Bike of the Year competitions. The quick low-down on the Joplin is that it'll take you up climbs as fast as "Piece of My Heart" took Cheap Thrills up the charts. The longer story is a bit more complicated, a tale of suspension and components dramatic enough to rival the biography of fast-living young rock stars.

Juliana's carbon frames are laid-up in two pieces: a complete rear triangle and a complete main triangle. This eliminates the need for bonding separate tubes, which can result in additional layers of material to strengthen joints. It also means that carbon fibers can continue through the joints, wrapping around key junctures for additional strength while using less material overall. For 2015, Juliana has reduced the cost of carbon while maintaining the stiffness and reliability by refining the above processes and opting for a nominally heavier material. The result is about 250 grams of extra weight that affords your wallet a more-than-nominal weight gain and avoids rider weight limits altogether.

The suspension consists of a FOX Float CTD Evolution shock enshrined in a virtual pivot point (VPP) suspension. The VPP suspension brings a simple, functional mechanism to life in a way that Joplin, with her preference as a late teen for men's jeans, would definitely appreciate. By using a dual-link suspension model, VPP creates an imaginary point where the first and third links would meet if they were extended in the frame's main triangle.

Since both links are hinged at either end, their relation to each other changes constantly throughout the suspension's travel, and the virtual point where they converge changes, too. During the first stages of travel, the top link sees the lion's share of rotation; as you move beyond the sag point into later stages of travel, the lower link sees the most movement. This effectively adjusts the pedaling platform over the course of travel to stay as close as possible to the sweet spot between pedal-stalling, anti-squat feedback and the loss of chain tension that results from too much pro-squat. The lower link features a grease port for ease of maintenance, and all frame bearings enjoy a lifetime warranty, so they're equal to the hard life of a young rock star.

Juliana specs the Joplin with FOX's Float 32 CTD Performance Fit fork, which — like the Float CTD shock — uses FOX's Climb Trail Descend system so you can adjust travel on the fly from a more efficient pedaling platform on climbs to a plush give that absorbs big hits on the downhills and everything in between. The Joplin has a shorter travel and a tighter head tube angle then the comparably-appointed Santa Cruz Tallboy LT, so it offers more stability while navigating technical terrain for those of us who enjoy the trails, but aren't taxing a bike's capabilities to the limits that Juliana Furtado herself did. The Joplin's ride isn't quite as extreme as its namesake, maybe sitting somewhere between a Janis and an Ella on the rock-the-boat scale. It does have a Joplin-esque affinity for tackling adversity and bad choices head on, with the 29 inch wheels handling oops moments in line decisions with confidence.

The moving bits of the drivetrain are Shimano SLX complemented with redoubtable XT front and rear derailleurs. Race Face provides the bridges from frame to saddle and bars. SRAM hubs are laced to WTB STi19 TCS rims for a tubeless-ready ride that the Maxxis Ikon tires readily take advantage of. The compact, proprietary Juliana saddle, bar, and grips are the only difference from the bikes that Santa Cruz specs for men.

The 2015 Juliana Joplin Carbon S is available in three sizes ranging from Small to Large in the matte color Siren Red.
