Carbon fiber, 29-inch wheels, and Virtual Pivot Point suspension is a combination that's satisfied the need of dirt worshipers for close to a half-decade. But, if you were of the fairer sex, you were stuck changing multiple parts in the hope that a bike not designed with your needs in mind would work. Juli Furtado is making sure that this issue no longer exists with the Juliana Joplin Carbon Primeiro complete mountain bike.
What was once a lone model in a sea of testosterone-fueled mountain bikes, Juliana is now a new division of Santa Cruz, led by non-other than Mountain Bike Hall of Fame inductee and multi-championship winning Juli Furtado. This means that each model meets her expectations -- not Joe Sixpack. If you take a look at the saddle, bars, and cranks of this Joplin Carbon Primeiro you'll see that they're sized proportionally for female riders.
This allows you to enjoy the benefits of a carbon fiber 29er out of the box. One of those carbon advantages, aside from the obvious -- weight -- is it allows the frame to offer superior line-holding stiffness. The front triangle is constructed as once piece. Rather than have components produced separately, and then bonded or wrapped, the carbon fibers are continuous around tube junctions to distribute loads and absorb impact energy better.
One thing that you can't see without cutting the frame in half is that it looks as good on the inside as it does on the outside. There's nothing there except smooth carbon, this actually prevents stress risers in failure prone areas of the frame. For that reason too, there are no riveted or bonded-on cable and hose guides--they're incorporated into the original layup.
That layup provides stiff and solid mounting points for the latest generation of VPP rear suspension. The upper and lower links flatten out the shock rate and provide a more active feel to the early part of the axle path. The suspension allows the rear wheel to move up and back as you ride over a bump, and it balances the downward force of pedaling with the pulling force of the chain through its link configuration and axle path. The resulting movement makes it easier to roll over a bump or through a dip, and the suspension doesn’t change whether you’re in the saddle or not.
The Juliana Carbon Primeiro has a carbon fiber upper link that shaves weight and enhances lateral stiffness. It's counterpart on the bottom is alloy, and it has easily-serviceable grease ports. The pivots for both links have stout 15mm locking collet axle-pins so they won't creak or loosen, and they run on intricately-sealed bearings that should last the life of the frame.
The VPP suspension of this Juliana yields 100mm of smooth travel damped by a FOX CTD rear shock with Kashima -- a lightweight, reliable shock that features an intuitive interface for simple, on-the-fly suspension tuning. It has three distinct settings; a firm 'Climbing' setting, medium 'Trail' setting, and a plush 'Descend' setting. This keeps operation straightforward and intuitive for beginners and experts alike.
Complementing the CTD rear shock is a 120mm FOX 32 FLOAT CTD front shock with Kashima. Like the 142 x 12mm rear axle, the fork sports a 15mm thru axle for stiffness. A hand-laced and tensioned wheelset composed of DT 350 hubs, 14/15 butted spokes, and WTB i19 rims spin around those axles. For tires, fast-rolling Maxxis Crossmark 2.1 tubeless tires provide a nice mix of speed and grip.
The Drivetrain is a 3x10 Shimano XT group, including the front and rear derailleur, shifters, cranks, and cassette. Stopping the Carbon Primeiro are a set of 160mm rotor Shimano XT brakes. Finishing off the build are Juliana Compact handlebars, Easton EA70 stem, and Thomson seatpost with a Juliana Primeiro saddle perched atop of it.

I have to admit, I am pretty skeptical when it comes to women specific anything. Bikes, apparel, saddles... I raise an eyebrow. But Santa Cruz is headed in the right direction with the Juliana line of bikes, and the Joplin stands proudly at the top of that line for good reason, she's a bad ass bitch of a ride and is not to be trifled with.
I'm 5'9" with a 34 inch inseam, and a tiny torso, which puts me more in the 'freak of nature' category of bikes and less in the 'women's specific' side most of the time. With that being said, I was iffy about the ride quality and fit of the Joplin before I rode it. I have to admit, all of my preconceived notions about the Joplin were gone when I entered the Bar Trails in Moab. One ride on Circle-O loop and the grin on my face said it all.
Santa Cruz didn't skimp on any parts the Joplin Premiero. No lower end parts 'just to save on costs because girls don't ride' BS. This bike is legit and it is one of the best mountain bikes I've ridden in a while. The build was golden and the suspension felt great when I dialed it in. Even the smaller grips felt comfortable under hand, even though my hands aren't that small. I felt like I wasn't gripping the bars super hard, which made for relaxed hands and less tense arms when descending.
If you are wondering how this bike compares to other Santa Cruz bikes, it is legitimately the big sister to the Tallboy, and rides as such. Regardless of your sex, if you are looking for a bike and happen to be 5'9" or smaller, GET THIS BIKE.
The only thing I would change about the Joplin is the ability to customize the build. I am hoping that Santa Cruz will release just the frame so I can build it up with a SRAM XX1 group, Shimano XTR trail brakes, a dropper seat post, a set of I9 trail wheels, and an Enve cockpit.
