Never satisfied with complacency, Juliana started with what it liked from last year's Furtado — and then changed it all. Santa Cruz's sister company took the responsiveness and trail-ready capability the frame was known for and enhanced it with a longer, slacker geometry and more aggressive pedaling posture to give it more versatility and speed across challenging terrain. Whether you're cleaning an impossibly steep crux or shredding a descent laced with rock gardens, the 2016 Juliana Furtado 2.0 was made to handle it all more consistently, with race-ready responsiveness and a Shimano drivetrain that's equipped to embrace your rowdiest rides.
Juliana started its geometry changes by altering both the head tube and seat tube angles, decreasing the head tube angle by a full degree from 67 to 68 degrees. The seat tube angle moved in the opposite direction, steepening from 73 degrees to 74. With these changes, you get a frame that will offer more stability as you blast through technical descents and roost switchbacks while also keeping your body in an optimal position for pedaling hard uphill or accelerating across smooth ribbons of singletrack. Not content to stop there, Juliana also lengthened the reach and Boosted the rear axle to 148mm, which in turn allowed for shorter, stiffer chainstays and hubs and pivots that will face less wear from torque over time. All-together, these changes increase the stiffness and efficiency of the frame, providing you with a more aggressive bike that dominates terrain we'd expect a trail bike to shy away from.
Though the geometry changes were extensive, Juliana didn't stop there, upgrading the previous model's Virtual Pivot Point (VPP) suspension to VPP3 with an additional 5mm of travel. The Furtado 2.0 also situates the two counter-rotating links higher in the chassis for added smoothness and durability. You'll feel a difference in the tuning when you encounter rutted trails and jarring sections of root lattice, as the FOX Float suspension and RockShox fork devour small bumps while VPP3 keeps a hold on the trail to maintain traction. Expect a consistent, responsive pedaling platform that can take big hits when you need it to and stays firm when the focus is on speed.
As the only element of the Furtado to not receive a major overhaul, the Carbon C lay-up makes another appearance in the 2.0 frame with the same stiffness and durability we've seen before and a price tag that's easier to swallow than that of Juliana's Carbon CC frames. Slightly heavier than its pricier counterpart, Carbon C is just as strong and stiff, especially as Juliana creates both triangles as complete, monocoque pieces. Juliana's dual-compaction construction method leaves a very small gap between Carbon C and Carbon CC and sets the Furtado apart from its similarly priced peers.
