We're pleased to announce that the Intense Uzzi Mountain Bike Frame is back with a vengeance. As the original "Swiss Army knife of mountain bikes," the Uzzi has a rich history as one of the original long-travel trail bikes. For a few years there, the Slopestyle snuck into the Uzzi's spot as the ultimate pedal-friendly gravity bike, but since the demise of the SS series, the Uzzi has regained its rightful crown. Whether you look at it as a Downhill bike that's efficient enough to climb, or as a trail bike for gnarly terrain, there's no denying that the Uzzi is built to take abuse. And best of all, the steep, full length seat tube and responsive VPP suspension mean that the only uplift you need comes in the form of your legs.

Perhaps more than any bike in Intense's lineup, the Uzzi's split personality means that it has to descend without hesitation, while being efficient enough under power to avoid being burdensome when climbing. That makes VPP an ideal match for the Uzzi. VPP employs two aluminum counter-rotating links to achieve this balance. Pedaling efficiency comes courtesy of the upper link, which provides most of the rotation as the bike compresses into the sag point. This yields a vertical wheel path, which you'll notice in the form of a firm feel during acceleration. As the bike compresses deeper into the suspension, the lower link activates, moving the axle path rearward. The rearward axle path enables the rear wheel to travel out of the way of square-edged impacts. So while the Uzzi may never be an XC race bike, it will climb without wasting energy. And the descents? Well, with the option of six and a half, or seven inches of travel and aggressive, adjustable geometry, all but the hairiest descents are going to be a piece of cake.

Aluminum is the material of choice here, both for its durability and the incredible tube-forming opportunities it provides. The Uzzi's intended use requires that it be built like a brick house, but if it weighed as much, it would sacrifice the versatility that makes it such a favorite. This dilemma helps to illuminate the reasons for the Uzzi's semi-monocoque front triangle construction. When we say semi-monocoque, what we mean is that there's a traditional round down tube, while the top tube assembly is built from two mirrored halves welded down the seam, also known as a monocoque.

The use of the round down tube guarantees a well-aligned frame, and the lack of seams makes it the strongest option for a section of the front triangle that is under tension when riding. But by using a monocoque top tube, Intense is able to increase the weld area at the head tube far beyond what would be possible with tubular construction. That increased weld surface means a stiffer, stronger head tube junction, and accordingly, more precise steering. And the full 1.5in head tube enables compatability of both an Angleset, to fine tune the steering geometry, and modern tapered forks, ensuring inch-perfect steering, even under heavy braking, or larger riders.

The asymmetrical rear triangle borders on being overbuilt, which ensures that you can send it season after season, worry-free. By using an oversized upright on the non-drive side, the drive side of the rear triangle is able to be lightened, while simultaneously improving drivetrain clearance. And it gets Intense's G3 replaceable dropout system, with a modern 12x142mm thru axle. Not only does this add stiffness, but the G3 dropout enables a quarter inch of chainstay adjustment fore or aft of the neutral 17.25-inch setting. By using a replaceable dropout, rather than a replaceable derailleur hanger, you also get a stiffer mount for the derailleur, and accordingly, crisper shifts, with the peace of mind that comes with knowing you can replace your hanger should your derailleur meet a particularly grisly demise.

The Intense Uzzi Mountain Bike Frame is available in three sizes, from Small to Large, and in the colors Flat Black, Works Raw, Flo Orange, and Intense Red.
