Intense Cycles introduced Eddie to the world a few years ago, and the light, snappy hardtail has been hard to ignore since. Lovingly crafted out of carbon fiber and featuring a hardworking SRAM X7 build kit paired with capable Sun rims, the Hard Eddie Foundation Complete Mountain Bike doesn't like to get left behind on singletrack. This suspension-free hardtail was designed to devour smooth hardpack without complaint, and while the frame's quickness and responsive handling make Eddie an obvious choice for a speed-conscious cross-country racer, self-sponsored riders need not race it to appreciate its capable 29er wheels and instinct to go fast.
Given that it's known for manipulating metal, we're not surprised that Intense initially partnered with consultants from composite experts SEED to make the best possible use of carbon fiber. The Made in USA ethos still stands though, thanks to the fact that all the dropouts are machined in Temecula, CA alongside Intense's aluminum models. It ensures that your bike benefits from the best of modern composite construction and maintains the soul you'd expect.
Intense crafts the Hard Eddie's frame as a single-piece, monocoque construction using high-modulus carbon fiber, ensuring the frame is as light as possible while eliminating any weakening stress points or unnecessary seaming. This construction keeps the frame's weight low, which is especially important to weight-conscious XC racers. Low weight thankfully doesn't cost the frame in comfort, however, as the Hard Eddie's bowed tubes serve to dampen vibrations and dissipate impacts before they travel up the seatpost.
As the most affordable member of the Hard Eddie line, the Foundation build includes SRAM's workhorse groupset, 10-speed X7, for reliable, consisting shifting as you ride or race, and Intense includes its G1 replaceable dropout system with a 12 x 142mm thru-axle on the Hard Eddie. By using a replaceable dropout, rather than a replaceable derailleur hanger, you get a stiffer mount for the derailleur, and accordingly, crisper shifts. During the few times you do want to slow the Hard Eddie down, Shimano XT hydraulic disc brakes bring responsive, reliable stopping power to the frame, while Maxxis' race-minded Ikon tires wrapped around Sun Inferno rims grip on corners without holding on too tightly to the ground when you're pedaling for valuable seconds on a straightaway.
