Ready for anything.

Whether it's the nearly instantaneous engagement of the hubs, or the striking anodized colors, Industry Nine's wheels have something for everyone. And in the case of the Trail 27.5in 24H Wheelset, you're looking at an all-new Torch hub design and a 2:1 lacing ratio that perfectly compliments the mid-sized 27.5-inch wheels. And, on top of weighing in around a svelte 1460 grams, these wheels are designed for raw strength. So, in other words, you no longer have to make any compromises to obtain the wheel characteristics that you really want.

While traditional spokes are drawn from steel wire, I-9 spokes are machined from 7075 aluminum. The spokes are straight pull, and they have roughly a 25% greater cross section then comparable 14/15 double butted steel spokes. This translates into greater tensile strength. The threading on these spokes is also exclusive to Industry Nine. On traditional spokes, threads are rolled, not cut. This adds to strength, but creates a stress riser where the thread channel is narrower than the diameter of the spoke itself. However, Industry Nine doesn't need to roll its threads. Instead, they're created during the machining process, only they're cut so that the thread channel is the same as the spokes diameter. The threads themselves are actually larger than the spoke for a strong interface with the hub. Not surprisingly, that's not all that I9 did to improve the Torch.

The new Torch hubs are now compatible with all axle standards via separately available end caps. The big news, however, is within the hub. The Torch preserves the 120 points of contact and near-instant three degrees engagement that's helped to earn Industry Nine its cult following. Only now, the pawls have two teeth instead of three. Along with that, a changed cantilever angle and shallower tooth profile on the hardened drive ring reduce freehub drag as compared to previous versions. Additionally, the Torch hubs incorporate a proprietary mechanism that features two sets of three pawls phased three degrees from each other.

The rear hub was tested to withstand 700ft/lbs of torque -- roughly what a built diesel truck puts out. That fact will quiet any fears of slippage when you're putting out full power. But, it's quick engagement that enables you to clean steep, technical trail sections. And with three degrees of ration between engagement points, that won't be an issue. Its engineers removed the large bearing between the freehub body and shell, opting for smaller bearings directly between the body and shell. The reduced bearing size means less seal surface area that, along with a new silicone lip design, significantly reduces mechanical drag. The freehub is also now easier to remove for cleaning/lubing, and like before, the springs and pawls are captured. Home mechanics rejoice -- this means that you won't be scrambling on the floor looking for small parts.

These wheels feature a low 24 spoke count, but don't mistake these for a flimsy race-only wheelset. They employ a 2:1 lacing ratio, meaning that there's 16 spokes on the side bearing the greatest load, and 8 on the less-stressed side. The effect is that the wheel achieves a far more balanced tension, rather than experiencing vastly different loads on each side of the wheel -- as is the case in traditional wheel constructions. There's a 200 pound weight limit, simply to provide a margin for safety. But, in our experience, these wheels are more than up to the task as far as hard riding is concerned.

That brings to light another defining feature of these wheels -- there are no nipples. The spokes thread directly into the hub in order to eliminate a redundant part. They also use a standard 15-gauge spoke wrench and conventional truing methods in order to maintain serviceability for long-term use.

With a 23.4mm inner width, the Industry Nine's Trail rim is one of the widest 27.5-inch rims on the market, which yields an ideal profile with today's wider tires. They feature a double-wide design for strength without a heavy weight penalty, and they also provide an excellent level of stiffness for precise tracking on rough trails.

The Industry Nine Trail 27.5in 24H Wheelset is available with a 15mm front and 142 x 12mm rear thru-axle compatibility. They're tubeless-ready and come in either the color Black or Red. Please note: these wheels ship with the Presta valve stems and rim tape already installed.
