We've grown accustomed to seeing the SL acronym plastered over every imaginable bicycle component in a proclamation that said item is SuperLight and — by implication — super awesome. While the Ripley LS XT 1x Werx Complete Mountain Bike isn't a heavyweight by any means, the letters mean something different when reversed. The LS stands for Longer and Slacker, referencing changes in frame geometry from the standard Ripley measurements in the form of a longer wheelbase, 15mm more top tube, and a head tube angle that fell to 67.5 degrees. That bigger footprint empowers those of us who have already been treating the Ripley as a baby enduro sled, and in Ibis' words, brings this frame up from "sporty" to "gnarly." This build of the Ripley LS takes that aggressive geometry and gives it the Ibis Werx treatment: a new Fox 34 Float fork, Shimano's revamped XT drivetrain, and — most importantly — Ibis' big, sexy, 941 Ultra Wide Carbon wheels.
Other than the LS geometry changes and the addition of those glorious 941 hoops, the Ripley LS Werx is still the classic Ripley recipe that we've been beating the hell out of across all manner of terrain. The construction process remains the same, beginning with an internal bladder that's wrapped in a monocoque carbon lay-up that keeps the carbon fabric intact through joints. This eliminates the need to reinforce tube junctions with additional material or lugs, keeping the frame light and strong. The Ripley LS's swingarm and clevis are filled with foam glass microsphere cores to ensure their structural integrity while keeping weight down, and it has the same expanded dropper capacity as the regular version.
The Ripley LS includes the latest Fox Float DPS shock and EVOL can, which is tuned for the DW-Link suspension's firm, consistent pedaling platform. Expect it to handle with nimble speed while accelerating out of turns and taking advantage of the suspension's strong anti-squat tendencies. The 120mm of rear travel, combined with the Ripley LS's 67.5-degree head tube, makes for a surprisingly eager trail platform that combines the best qualities of XC and mid-travel bikes.
Increasing rear stiffness is key to this versatility, so Ibis engineers revisited the internals of the dual eccentrics used in the DW-Link suspension, modifying the cores and adding extra carbon to the frame for more responsive power transfer. In addition to adding tire clearance, the redesigned right-side upright and the return of a swingarm-mount for the front derailleur contribute to an overall stiffer rear triangle. The chainstays also contribute to stiffness by remaining impressively stubby, and the carbon 941 hoops all-but eliminate the noodliness of most 29in wheel platforms. Finally, the CNC-machined threads of the 73mm bottom bracket grant peace of mind with less creaking than a PressFit model.
