If you're anything like us, then you're probably also guilty of subjecting the original Ripley to far more aggressive enduro abuse than it was designed for, and you're also probably part of the reason why Ibis tweaked the venerable 29er's geometry for more violent riding. Slackening the head tube angle and lengthening the top tube, Ripley engineered a beastlier LS version of the Ripley, and this year, the Ripley LS X01 Complete Mountain Bike now boasts a stiffer frame and SRAM's impossibly convenient one-by X01 drivetrain, making it a more capable partner than ever for enduro, trail, and all-mountain rowdiness.

According to Ibis, modifications to the Ripley's carbon layup resulted in a frame that's now 12% stiffer at the bottom bracket and tougher throughout the entire frame. Ibis' careful carbon molding around internal bladders ensures that the frame retains desirable lightness, with the swingarm and clevis molded around foam glass microsphere cores to enhance their structural integrity without adding bulk. Though they've reclined the head tube to 67.5 degrees and stretched the top tube by 15mm, Ibis emphatically asserts that, like the original Ripley, this is a 29er that can behave like a tank on descents without losing its quick, nimble handling through the tight-and-twisties.

Besides the recent introduction of LS geometry, 2016 brings a brand new FOX Float DPS shock with EVOL can, retuned to better glide over small bumps while staying supportive through the middle and end of the pedal stroke. According to Ibis, this enables the Ripley LS to spring over jumps with more finesse, though we can confirm that it does still rely on a capable engine (read: you) to pick the best lines. The 130mm travel FOX 34 Float fork also received a revamp, becoming more responsive while actually losing weight to promise plushness when you need it with less risk of bottoming out in unexpected trail craters or brake diving when you need to scrub speed fast.

Ibis also made updates to the enigmatic eccentrics used in the Ripley LS's DW-Link suspension system, aiming to create a stiffer drive spine while accommodating larger chainstay cutouts for the ever-increasing tire sizes. Its adoption of the Mojo's internal cable routing creates a cleaner overall design, further complemented by the absence of a front derailleur when spec'd with SRAM's X01 11-speed, one-by drivetrain, providing smooth shifting through a luxuriously wide range of gear ratios. We can't praise Ibis' abandonment of PressFit bottom brackets in favor of a traditional threaded bottom bracket enough: it shows a refreshingly strong attention to quality on Ibis' part, and it's impossible to argue against the creak-free efficiency of a threaded bottom bracket.
