Believe it.

If the Ripley Cane Creek DB Mountain Bike Frame is any indication of Ibis' stance on what most of the industry seems to accept are the limitations of 29ers, the California-based manufacturer doesn't believe that big-wheel bikes are for cross-country, only. Believe it or not, Ibis has packed five inches of DW-Link travel into a 29er platform that, due in no small part to its DW-Link suspension, still enjoys speed comparable to a hardtail.

The Ripley begins life as an internal bladder that dictates the frame's inner shape. This form is wrapped in a single-piece carbon layup, allowing Ibis to extend unbroken threads into, around, and through joints for a stronger build that actually requires less material. The precision available to this method also eliminates the need for additional mold structures and filler material, resulting in the optimal weight and stiffness. The clevis and swingarm uprights are further reinforced with foam glass microsphere cores, which add stiffness and durability without adding a glut of grams.

The frame is built around a DW-Link suspension design that incorporates a Cane Creek DB shock to provide what you've come to know, love, and expect from any machine bearing Dave Weagle's initials: small bump compliance, predictable travel, and no harsh bottoms on square hits. The suspension really shines when you're taking advantage of 29er speed by throwing power into the trail, exhibiting solid anti-squat characteristics for a snappy response whether you're sprinting uphill or accelerating out of a switchback.

The main bearings are largely protected inside the seat tube, but the hardware itself actually has a higher load rating than its counterpart in the venerable Mojo HD, so you can rest assured that the bearings will last. Their lifespan also gets a boost from a reinforced front upright between the stays and a swingarm-mounted derailleur, both of which allow for a stiffer system that produces less torsional and lateral load on the bearings and links.

The eccentric links in Weagle's design also allow for tighter rear spacing, keeping the chainstays underneath 17.5-inches — pretty damn impressive on a 29er. The precision handling they provide complements the tapered, 70-degree head tube's ability to pick a line and track true, making the ride equal parts surgical finesse and 29-inch aggression.
