Younger siblings always seem to get away with more. Sneaking one extra cookie, managing to stay home "sick" on nice days while the responsible eldest dutifully maintained perfect attendance — the list of transgressions goes on and on. Ibis is doing nothing to assuage the grief that older siblings feel toward younger siblings with the all-new Mojo 3 Carbon 27.5 Plus XTR 2x WERX Complete Bike. Ibis is proudly calling the Mojo 3 the baby brother of the burlier HD3, and with its shorter travel, nimble chainstays, and a decidedly enduro-friendly front end, the Mojo 3 will keep up on every trail you took your HD3 on — and it'll have more fun doing it.
Ibis built the Mojo 3 on the theme of the bold, but correct, assertion that most cyclists are hard-pressed to ever find terrain that's brutal enough to actually warrant the long-and-low enduro monsters that have dominated the covers of high-gloss publications as of late. Rather than create another bike that would be overkill and a bit plodding on your favorite trails, Ibis took the less-traveled route, setting out to make something more playful, more agile, and just as capable of handling the challenging lines your HD3 blasted through.
The brand started with a full carbon monocoque construction that actually represents the seventh lay-up schedule that Ibis built during prototype testing. The result is a claimed frame weight savings of 0.4lbs compared to its older bro. Ibis added a tapered head tube to further increase stiffness up front for more line-choosing confidence, and like a parent who vows to do things better the second time around, adopted Boost spacing to give the Mojo 3 a feel all of its own.
The inclusion of Boost wasn't done in blind response to industry trends; rather, adding Boost in the rear allowed Ibis to slam the rear wheel forward, shortening the chainstays to a squat 16.73in while still leaving enough clearance for tires up to 2.8in in diameter. It then contrasted the tight rear triangle with a 140mm Pike fork, kicking the head tube angle out to 66.8 degrees and giving the Mojo 3 the same long-and-low swagger of its older brother but with more agility. This combination lends the Mojo 3 the ability to fly up climbs ahead of struggling, larger enduro sleds and dice through lines on the backside descent.
It's only fitting that the Mojo 3 receive a shock tune and suspension to match its lively frame, and Ibis kits it with the latest DW-Link 5 suspension and a shock tuned for early stroke plushness countered by robust ramp-up behavior later on. This translates to a firm feel off the top, small bump compliance on root-latticed climbs, and by big-hit reliability when you're heading into the unknown. In fact, the tubby 2.8in tires included with this build will add about an inch of additional, perceived depth to the suspension. Even if you choose to wrap the rims in a narrower tire for certain rides, the shock tune and suspension keep the bottom bracket's height at the sag point the same.
Ibis took advantage of the extra space afforded by Boost spacing to spec the bike with Shimano's top-of-the-line XTR drivetrain in a double configuration, giving you an extensive range of gear ratios and all of the confidence Shimano's flagship mechanical drivetrain inspires. As this Mojo 3 counts itself as a WERX build, it also comes with a set of Ibis' envy-inspiring matte carbon 741 rims complete with DT Swiss 350 internals in the rear. These sleek rims boast a commanding 41mm throne and hookless bead on which your 2.8in Schwalbe tires will sit with all the calm assurance of royalty, experiencing none of the unwieldy height and disconcerting bounciness of wider tires forced onto narrower rims.
