You might be thinking that a tire that rolls fast on hardpack won't cope well with aggressive cornering. If that sounds like you, the Hutchinson Cobra XC 29er Tire is reason to reevaluate your outlook. Its tightly spaced center knobs reduce rolling-resistance in order to a bare minimum, while the tall side knobs keep you on your line when you're changing direction -- even when you're pushing hard.
The Cobra's tread pattern is all about achieving high speeds through low rolling-resistance. And, although they slightly struggle with mud and wet conditions, these tires fly on dry trails with plenty of hardpack. Looking at the centerline of the tire, the tightly spaced knobs make this abundantly clear. As you get away from the centerline, the tread opens up, and the angled intermediate knobs provide a smooth transition to the side knobs. Speaking of which, these aggressive side knobs set the Cobra apart from other tires within its class. And while many other tightly spaced tread designs feature dainty side knobs, the cornering knobs on the Cobra are tall and well supported. This means that when you get these tires on edge, they'll bite hard to keep you on your line.
Hutchinson provides the Cobra in a number of variations. So, to clear up any confusion, this is the tubless-ready 'hardskin' version. 'Hardskin' refers to the tire's reinforced sidewall, which provides an added degree of puncture-resistance over some lighter weight casings. The tubeless designation is relatively self-explanatory -- these tires have an enlarged bead hook to make setting them up without tubes a simple affair. Just keep in mind that with all tubeless tires, you'll need to run an appropriate amount of tire sealant in order to reap the full benefit of a tube-free setup.
