Description

Turnkey, mobile repair kit.

Putting together a tool kit for mountain biking requires experience, forethought, and knowledge of the tools that are available. However, if you're new to the sport, haven't worked in a shop your whole life, or just don't need to use your resources to piecemeal something together, then the Hero Kit for Mountain Biking is for you.

Not only does the kit provide tools, it also includes step-by-step instructions, too. This means that when your electronic gadgets are out of range or have chewed through a battery, you're still able to reference a 24-page waterproof manual of easy-to-follow instructions. Essentially, that's the extent of this kits thoughtfulness. However, it's much more than just a book and multi-tool in a plastic bag.

First off, the included LokSak is a waterproof, highly-durable bag -- not something that you pack a lunch in. The Hero Kit also includes a multi-use wipe in order to spare your favorite sock from a dishonorable trailside demise. Some more commonly overlooked essentials are duct tape, cable ties, and an emergency contact card.

Well, that covers personal and some mechanical aids, although, there's more to the latter. You'll also find that the Hero Kit smartly includes a gear cable, 9- and 10-speed KMC replacement links, a frame bolt, and a cleat bolt. If you've ever experienced the frustration of a loose cleat halfway through a ride, you're able to rightfully appreciate the last detail.

As for tire repairs, the kit includes a Planet Bike tire levers and a patch kit, along with a Tyvek boot in order to repair torn sidewalls. Finally, the Hero Kit Hero Kit for Mountain Biking's multi-tool has 12 functions including all of the common Allen wrenches, a T25 torx, and a chain breaker.

It's worth the weight.

Thank you Backcountry.com and Hero Kit for hand-selecting me to review this piece of gear for the benefit of the Backcountry.com community!

We were 80 miles into 150 mile our trip. Leaving from Harrisonburg, Va earlier that morning, we started climbing over into West Virginia. We had anticipated this climb all morning. I didn’t know specifically how this trip was going to challenge me; all I knew was that it was going to be hard. Luckily for me, my boyfriend Matt is a crazy cyclist like me and agreed to take the trip with me. As any cyclist knows, you have to keep pushing the pedal on stroke at a time. The lactic acid builds in your legs, your breathing becomes heavier and the precipitation on your face builds. There is a certain draw to this biological pain that keeps us cyclists coming back for more. We continued our climb into the mountains. Hard long pedal strokes dominated much of our ride. We finally reached the peak of the mountain; my legs could finally spin freely. As I started to breathe a sigh of relief, I heard Matt behind me, “Oh no, no, no.” We managed to pull over to the side of the road and Matt inspected his bike. Much to our surprise, his front derailleur cable snapped. Sometimes our adventures don’t go as planned. Small mechanic features can derail an adventure that could have easy been avoided. Hero Kit allows for the adventure to continue. The package can fit easily in a riding backpack. It seems to be too heavy to fit in a jersey pocket. The airtight packaging keeps rain and moisture out. Hero Kits are packed with supplies that every rider should pack, but often forget. Each kit comes equip with a manual on how to complete each fix and the predicted level of intensity for each fix. This pack is ideal for beginners who want to ride and have the comfort of a mechanic along for the ride. I would highly recommend using Hero Kit to carry along on any adventure or any route. Great gift for beginners or for any young cyclist learning to fix his or her bike.

Great booklet!

Great booklet!

The booklet that comes with the Hero Kit has easy instructions and also a predicted level of intensity for each fix. That way you can choose if you want to get knee on a fix on the side of the trail.

Pretty much everything you could need

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

This is a pretty slick kit with everything you could need for basically any situation on the trail. From getting the Hero kit, you will know those who designed it did their homework and really pulled a great kit to help get you out in case of emergency. I'm typically a minimalist when I ride, meaning I hate carrying anything with me. Is it smart, no, not really. However if I was planning a longer ride, or just the piece of mind knowing that if anything comes up I am good, I would have this kit. It's well thought out with items you may need in an emergency as well as a really helpful book in case you've never replaced a link in a chain. Everything packs up pretty small in a waterproof pouch with a bit extra room if you have a few other things in mind.

very convenient

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

This is a great tool kit to take on the long mtb rides. It has everything you need and also things you didn't think of. I like the fact that it comes with a small manual so you can read directions on how exactly to fix something-especially handy if you are not mechanically inclined. It is a little heavy though but definitely worth the little extra weight for piece of mind.
