HED's Ardennes SL Plus Disc Brake Clinchers negotiate a diplomatic compromise between two technological eras. More and more, tubulars are taking over for racing applications, but the idea of gluing tires for everyday use and training only sounds feasible if there's a team car and dedicated mechanic involved. The fact that these are clinchers mean they're ideal for everyday use, and the fact that they're built on the nigh-indestructible Ardennes Plus platform mean that they're equal to virtually any abuse. While they eschew tubs for clinchers, the Ardennes SL Plus wheels do make concessions to the more convenient innovations in wheelset technology: wide rims and disc brakes.
HED's oversized Plus rims have an external width of 25 millimeters to better accommodate the trend of 25 millimeter tires, but their benefits go well beyond that, even with 23 millimeter tires. Simply put, wider rims make for a better tire profile, which results in a better grip in corners and lower rolling resistance. It also orients more of the sidewall vertically, so the tire is better able to deform around irregularities in the road surface, so you'll roll through bumps and pebbles, not over them. If you're after an even plusher ride, the rims are tubeless-ready and include tubeless tape.
The other nod this model of Ardennes SLs make to the future is their disc brake mounts. While the UCI has yet to approve disc brakes for use in competition, the consumer market demand and increased control over stopping power will no doubt force their hand in the next few years. By using a smaller diameter for its stopping surface (the disc instead of the rim), disc brakes actually require more power to lock-up. This means that, instead of around 200 pounds of force before your wheels seize, you can modulate your stopping power across a range of about 1,000 pounds. They also grab immediately in all conditions without taking a full rotation to clear debris from the brake track.
The hubs come from HED's Sonic line. They run ABEC5 bearings on oversized axles, 12mm in front and 15mm in the rear. The flanges are spaced as widely as possible to create a stronger bracing angle, resulting in lateral stiffness that any rider approaching HED's suggested weight limit of 225 pounds will appreciate. The front hub has a carbon-fiber body with aluminum end caps. The rear hub is aluminum with tall flanges and includes a grease port so you can re-lube without taking your wheel apart. Both skewers are titanium.
Please note that HED's Sonic Disc hubs are compatible with Shimano Centerlock rotors. An adapter is required for use with 6-bolt rotors.
