Still ahead.

The legacy of the late Steve Hed is undoubtedly secure thanks to his uncanny ability to turn the industry on its head with new technology every few years. But just in case there was any doubt, the HED Ardennes FR Wheelset has returned to us virtually unchanged for another year, proudly displaying Mr. Hed's name on one of the only aluminum rims that still qualifies for use in races at the highest levels.

The Ardennes FRs were the first model of the Ardennes genus, which set the cycling industry on its head by challenging one of cycling's most specious assumptions. With a 23mm rim, the Ardennes FR wheels offset a nominal weight gain with a lower rolling resistance, more secure grip while cornering at speed, a higher tire volume that requires less PSI and nets a more comfortable ride, and — counterintuitively — a smaller aerodynamic footprint.

The current generation of Ardennes FR wheels also incorporate the same features that made the original FR so revolutionary. The rim is still an alloy of aluminum and scandium that effectively mimics the fatigue resistance, stiffness, and strength of titanium, so the end product can be made with less material — and therefore lower weight — than aluminum alone. It's also got the low spoke count of the previous model, which keeps weight down while taking advantage of the wider rim's increased resistance to flex.

The hubs are HED's Sonic Silver model. They run ABEC5 bearings on oversized axles, 12mm in front and 15mm in the rear. The flanges are spaced as widely as possible to create a stronger bracing angle, resulting in lateral stiffness that any rider approaching HED's suggested weight limit of 225 pounds will appreciate. The front hub has a carbon-fiber tube with aluminum end caps. The rear is aluminum with exaggerated flanges and a grease port, so you can power wash these beauties and re-lube as needed. Both skewers have titanium shafts, and the ratchet ring in the rear hub is also titanium.

Awesome wheels

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I purchased these from Backcountry before the holidays and finally got to put some miles on them now that spring is here. There are outstanding. Light, nimble and I've ridden on some dicey weathered ravaged roads with no problems. The best part is the braking.
