Alloy stiffness; carbon smooth.

For all the carbon offerings on the road these days, there are still certain categories of frame qualities where aluminum excels. We're thinking of weight (aluminum is absurdly light) and snappy power transfer. GT takes advantage of both of these qualities with the Grade 105 Complete Bike. The Grade 105 uses a carbon fork and GT's Triple Triangle design to further capitalize on aluminum's stiffness while alleviating the harsh ride associated with more traditional aluminum frame shapes.

The iconic Triple Triangle design was first introduced 24 years ago and its simple effectiveness continues to this day. The sharper angle of the seatstays lets GT reinforce the stays, so they're more laterally stiff, and it also distributes road noise and bumps through the frame instead of just porting them straight up the seatpost. The improved stiffness means more flexibility, which in turn means better acceleration for cyclists of any level, whether you're sprinting for the finish line or the county line.

The triangles are built using double-butted alloy tubing, the top and down tubes of which are hydroformed to engineer better stiffness, weight, and ride quality. The tapered head tube also contributes, keeping the front end stiff and ensuring no power is wasted while you're enjoying the Triple Triangle's snappy acceleration by hammering out of the saddle.

The bike's shiniest kit bits may be the new Shimano 105 drivetrain, which is celebrating the new year by going to 11-speed. Not to be outdone, though are the hydraulic disc brakes and the brand new, Ultegra 11-tier Shimano hydraulic ST-RS685 shift levers, which many industry insiders are tipping to be the future standard for stopping road bikes. The FSA Omega Exo crankset is also a bright star on the Grade 105, as it's the venerable drivetrain expert's compromise between a standard and a compact crankset. The semi-compact 52/36t gearing means that the Grade can kick it hard when the tempo needs kicking, but it also won't destroy your knees on sustained grades nearing 20 percent.

The rest of the components are rounded out with an eye toward durable quality. Alex's ATD470 disc rims are mated to Formula Ultralight hubs by 28 and 32 spokes for the front and back, respectively. GT takes the saddle, stem, handlebars, and fork into their own hands, with the latter being made from carbon to keep road vibrations in the cockpit to a minimum.

The GT Bicycles Grade 105 Complete Bike is available in six sizes ranging from 51 to 60cm in the color Matte Raw.
