Description

Cycling often involves varying climates and conditions throughout a ride. Your body also experiences temperature fluctuations as you transition from climbing to descending. To say cycling jackets need to be versatile is an understatement. The Gore Bike Wear Phantom SO Jacket uses smart features like removable sleeves and Windstopper technology to keep your core protected and comfortable on early- or late-season rides.

The Windstopper soft shell fabric is a single-layer laminate that's similar to Gore-Tex, but instead of being fully waterproof, it favors wind protection and breathability. This offers excellent comfort during cool-weather, highly aerobic activities. The shell is treated with a DWR (Durable Water Repellent) coating for protection from light drizzles or road spray -- if you're looking for waterproofness, then check out jackets equipped with the Gore-Tex membrane .

Windstopper shines on cold rides when you plan on going hard and perspiring heavily. The fabric is soft against exposed arms, and quickly pulls perspiration from a baselayer and your skin. This keeps your core dry and helps the body regulate temperature so you can ride at max output without overheating or suffering from biting headwinds.

A jacket's material is one contributing factor to its ability to offer user comfort, but it's not the only one. Gore Bike Wear goes to great lengths to ensure that the fit is precise and function is intuitive and simple to use while riding. You'll find the Phantom Jacket to have a slim, performance-oriented fit to prevent flapping in the wind, but you won't find it restrictive. Gore added stretch inserts for freedom of movement, no matter where you find yourself positioned on the bicycle.

The Phantom's detachable, articulated sleeves also add to on-the-bike comfort by providing full coverage when stretched out in the drops. The best part is you can easily remove the sleeves, via a zip, and stash them in the slanted, easy-to-access side pockets. This is invaluable to offering the most versatility without adding weight, complexity, and gear to your ride (i.e. arm warmers).

Gore Bike Wear provided the Phantom SO Jacket with reflective logos and print on the front, back, sleeves, and sides for 360 degrees of low-light safety. The hem features elastic to prevent migration, and the front zip has a storm flap to lockout cold wind. It's available in Black, Black and White, Lemon, Neon Yellow, Pool Blue, Red, and White. The Phantom comes in sizes Small through XX-Large.

Couldn't ask for more

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

This is a fantastic cold weather jacket with excellent visibility in early morning, early evening, and generally low light situations. It's super warm (so you'll have to plan accordingly) and repels moisture (light rain and mist) reasonably. It's comfortable and while breathable, it doesn't stink up badly. It's my go-to during the winter.

Good Jacket

I bought this as a biking and running jacket. It works well for both. I sized up, mainly because I have King Kong style arms. The wind-blocker front and breathable back work well. The sleeves are easy enough to remove and stow. I like the short sleeves inside the jacket too, keeps the zippers from chaffing.

awesome

  • Gender: Male
  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I've seen great reviews and a few problems about fit. It fits me great, so I love this thing. the materials are much softer than expected, and it's a good looking jacket. the zipper teeth and other parts are tiny compared with regular non cycling jackets. Kinda worried if they will hold up, but we shall see. So far so good.

Awesome!

Honestly, it's awesome. There is nothing more that needs to be said :)

it really is! I used it last weekend here in Portland when it was about 45, and I ended up taking the sleeves off after an hour. Then I was perfectly comfortable again, very versatile and as warm in vest-mode as it was in jacket-mode. I've been wearing it for every ride this winter.

Ok if you get the sizing right

  • Gender: Male
  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I normally wear a M in Gore cycling gear (I'm 5'9", 180), but this jacket runs quite small. I went with a L and I could fit only a baselayer under it, which is what I was aiming for. The jacket performed really well -- very breathable and warm. I wore only a merino short sleeve shirt under it, and I was plenty warm in temps in the mid-40s on moderate intensity road rides. I can't see using the jacket as a jersey, which is essentially what you get when you remove the zip-off sleeves. If it's warm enough to ditch the sleeves, your core will fry. The zipper is very small and looks pretty cheap, and unfortunately it performs poorly as well. Mine broke after about a month of commuting and "real" rides, and BC stepped up with a replacement, as they always do. Strangely, the replacement was noticealby smaller than the original, so I'm not sure if sizing consistency is a widespread issue. I returned the replacement before using it.

Great Deal, and sized properly

I tried this jacket on in a store this morning before ordering, and it is a real Medium, not a Castelli Medium. You can order your size with the confidence that it will fit properly. I had a medium on with a t-shirt, base layer, and sweater, and it fit perfectly. Layering is easy, and you don't look all puffy when properly kitted out. All in all, a great deal. As an aside, I found the jacket for $120 at the store, saw it for $74.95 on RealCyclist and ordered immediately. It of course showed up on Chainlove 6 hours later, but when I contacted RealCyclist, they gladly refunded the difference, so I ended up paying $59.99 instead - THANKS Y'ALL!! THAT is good customer service!!!

Excellent multi-condition biking jacket

I've been using this jacket for a couple weeks now for both road and mountain biking and am incredibly satisfied with the product. Its construction is well-thought out and makes it versatile for a variety of temperatures.

Some of the highlights:
-You can easily remove and store the sleeves in the back pockets or just zip open the sleeve/armpit area slightly for additional breathability.
-Very breathable, helped by the fact that WINDSTOPPER fabric is only integrated where needed (i.e. not on the back of the jacket).
-Comfortable
-Lightweight
-Good looking

All in all I am very happy with the product and highly recommend it.

As a disclaimer, I am affiliated with Gore for product testing of Gore-tex products for the purpose of product review and recommendation. I do receive items from Gore for these purposes, though this item I purchased on my own.

stylish jacket.

  • Gender: Male
  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

After reading other reviews I was a little hesitant about buying this jacket.I will admit you shouldn't always believe what you read.It seems like fit is a issue with a lot of reviewers but not with me.I can wear several layers under neath the jacket while it may be snug it's not too tight.Windstopper is an awesome fabric.Gore has really hit a homerun with this one.I was a little more than surprized when I attacked hills and I came away practically dry.If I'd worn my regular jacket I'd been soak and wet.The fabric is 100% wind proof and It breathes better than any other product that I've ever tried.I am completely satisfied with this product.

Great cycling jacket, but size runs small

  • Gender: Male
  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

Keeps me warm but is almost to small, can only wear compression shirt under it or it is to tight around the arms

Great biking jacket

  • Gender: Male
  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I used this jacket for quite a few years, and it shines on long cycling adventures. Amazingly breathable, and really keeps the elements off you when riding through the wind and rain. This is a light ad
dition to your cycling garments!
Disclaimer: i test this gear for Gore.

Gore Bike Wear/Phantom SO Jacket

  • Gender: Male
  • Familiarity: I returned this product before using it

I returned the first one I bought, a size large, due to it being way too small. I exchanged it for an xtra Large and that also was too small. I normally wear a large, I am 6'1" and weigh 185. So if you buy this jacket be aware, it runs very small.

faulty zipper, poor service from Gore

  • Gender: Male
  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

This jacket would be incredible were it not for the zipper breaking after 4-6 weeks of regular use. Clearly a faulty product, but Gore would do nothing to help. They told me the zipper is not covered by warranty and that I should take it to a professional seamstress. Apparently, longevity wasn't included in the $150 MSRP. Never buying Gore Bikewear again.

Runs small and too short in the back

  • Gender: Male
  • Familiarity: I returned this product before using it

I did not ride the jacket; just tried it on and returning as it did not fit me well. The jacket seams to me to run small a bit, and did not fit good in shoulders and also felt a bit too short in back to my taste. I got a smoking deal on it and really wanted to keep it but still returning as did not like the fit. Also when the long sleeves are removed you are left with a west with soft short sleeves, I did not like much that feature... too much bulking in the shoulder pits..
I will give it 2-3 out of 5.

Really Nice, but Didn't Fit me/my needs

I must start off by saying that I returned this jacket, it just didn't fit me right and it slotted in poorly with my particular needs. That being said, it is probably one of the three nicest articles of cycling clothing I have ever donned.

My reason for return were twofold. 1st, the cut was a more relaxed fit than I was looking for. 6'1", 185, 32" waist and the midsection of the jacket was too loose for my liking. The arms also seemed a bit short, but I have long arms. I would have also liked more of a droptail in back. 2nd, I was planning on using this jacket as my warm jacket in the "visible jacket" category, but it wasn't warm enough for the 2.75 mile trip to work in Minneapolis on 20 degree days. I was hoping it could do double duty as a winter trainer/commuting jacket (since I don't have the money to have separate jackets), but it didn't quite fit the bill.

That being said, if you were going for a longer ride where you had time to get warmed up, it would be absolutely perfect. At least by my standards, it seems like over a longer ride it could go down pretty low temperature wise if you wore a good wool baselayer. The material is better than that of any other jacket you are wearing (especially at $75) and would be great at preventing "cold by sweat" that happens on longer rides in the cold.

Although this piece didn't work for what I wanted, I have to give it a great review because the quality is absolutely stupendous. I think the similar Xenon is what I'm looking for in fit after a bit of researching. Unfortunately, it can't be had for this price.

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

I SWORE I would NEVER, use a jacket for ANY of my riding,EVER! I was always a layer and VEST kinda guy. I felt TRAPPED in any kind of jacket i would wear. Boy, how things have changed! Through the....suggestion of a few of my riding friends,I gave this jacket a shot. In the words of infamy, why did i wait so long? This guy does it ALL! And the VERSITILITY,BUILD QUALITY,and funcionality makes it feel like i'm not wearing a jacket at all! Yes,i'm a TRUE CONVERSIONIST! If anyone out there is like i was, give this jacket a shot. I warn you though, you WILL CONVERT!

Best ever!

I ride in temperatures that range from mid 30's to the low 60's in the same ride. This jacket keeps me warm with the sleeves on and keeps me cool when I zip off the sleeves and unzip the front. You can also partially unzip the sleeves around the armpit for more ventilation when your body temperature gets up. Perfect for light rain too! I usually a medium but I have wide shoulders. I ordered the large and it is perfect in the shoulders and i little loose in the body but not too loose.

Awesome Jacket

  • Gender: Male

Just bought this jacket from BC. Very pleased with its fit, construction and features. I wanted a jacket that would battle cold and wind and this is it. I love that the zip off sleeves also serve as pit-zips for air if desired. Please note that the size chart listed by GORE is pretty accurate. Do not buy this jacket as some have by going with your usual size. I am 6' and 175 pounds and the XL provides just enough room in the sleeves and body so that the fit is not skin tight which i didn't want.

Holy Sizing Calamity!

  • Gender: Male
  • Familiarity: I returned this product before using it

I just got the jacket in the mail, and it's really nice, everything I was hoping for, was planning to wear it over a baselayer for winter MTB'ing, but holy jeez it is tight! I got an XL, I'm 6 foot, 200lbs, and usually wear Large tops/jackets. XL is like if I put a Medium on of most other garments. Unsure what to do! I'm not talking "slim fitting", I'm talking like I can barely get my puny arms in it, too. But nice jacket!

Bike jacket for the colder seasons

  • Gender: Male
  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I use this for everything short of trail running. I got it for commuting and it well.. dominates the conditions. My ride into work has bean as low as 20 deg so far and have had zero issues. great to have the full zip for ventilation, aswell as being able to unzip the sleeves a bit for some pit venting too. some fall days its dam cold in the morning then right up into the 60's by the time i go home. so off with the sleeves = perfect. also use it for mountain biking and sled dog training/joring... will prob try using it backcountry skiing too once snow arrives

Thanks for your review, how is the "waterproofness" of the jacket?
