For the knee-warmer-lovers.

Full- or even three-quarter-length cycling bottoms can sometimes be a bit too much. On those days when you know the weather's going to improve later in the day, sometimes you just want enough warmth to get you going and you'll use stashable knee warmers until then. For those particular conditions, you'll love the Gore Oxygen Partial Thermo Men's Bib Shorts.

The shorts feature strategically placed panels of Gore's venerable Windstopper fabric for wind and road spray protection in the crotch and the center of the back. This protects the areas where you're most likely to catch chilling air and water, while offering additional ventilation through in the areas where you won't miss the added barrier. Since Windstopper is literally windproof (i.e., it meets or exceeds the level of wind-resistance required to officially qualify a fabric as windproof), your engine and back will stay warm and dry while the thermo fabric used throughout the rest of the shorts maintains a comfortable temperature. The bibs themselves are the one non-thermal area, which we appreciate for flexibility and the ability to layer as little or as much as we like up top.

The Men's Oxygen insert is designed for long rides around the four-hour mark. It blends variable high-density and open-cell foam padding and wicking and ventilating material in a pliable, supportive structure. The Oxygen's landscape pads the bones you sit on (aka, your ischial tuberosity) and creates voids to protect the areas you'd rather not sit on. Elsewhere in the shorts, the flatlock stitching and shifted seams eliminate abrasion on areas that are prone to abuse and friction. You can focus on the scenery rather than counting down the base miles because of an uncomfortable chamois or irritating seams. Reflective elements on the front, sides, and back help keep you visible in low-light conditions.

The Gore Bike Wear Oxygen Partial Thermo Men's Bib Shorts are available in five sizes ranging from Small to XX-Large, and in the color Black.

Great shorts with limits

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

These shorts have been excellent this winter, I have mostly used them in the morning on my 1 hour commute to work (in the San Francisco Bay Area) in combination with leg or knee warmers. The fleecy material is warm against a cold start and the windstopper cod-piece is great. I say they are great with limits though, and those are temperature limits, I wouldn't want to be wearing them around here when the sun hits its apex. Also I wonder how comfortable they would be on 3h+ rides, the windstopper material is good at blocking the wind, but it is not as breathable/flexible as plain old fabric. Anyway, overall I have been happy with these bib shorts so far, hopefully they will give me a few winters of service!
