Keep the wind off.

Dressing in layers is a wise choice when you can't quite pin down the conditions you're going to face. That's pretty much true for all sports requiring technical clothing, but it's especially true of cycling, where a few thousand feet of elevation gain can land you in a completely different climate. The Gore Bike Wear WS Sleeveless Base Layer provides next-to-skin comfort and the wind-chill protection of WINDSTOPPER fabric no matter what you decide to wear on top of it.

Keeping wind from infiltrating the space between your clothing and your skin is a necessity for staying warm, so the WINDSTOPPER membrane in this 100-percent polyester base layer covers your critical organs up front and also wraps around your sides/kidney area. Friction is kept to a minimum by flatlock seams that glide over your skin. The back is extra-long to cover your whole lumbar region, even when you're in the drops. As a nice touch, Gore Bike Wear made the front logo at the base of the neck reflective for added visibility when your jersey is unzipped. The Gore Bike Wear WS Sleeveless Base Layer is tight-fitting and comes in sizes Small through XX-Large. You can choose Black or White.

  • A WindStopper membrane across your chest, shoulders, and obliques blocks the wind to keep you from freezing
  • Flexible back panel pulls moisture away from the skin to keep you dry and assist in body-temperature regulation
  • Flat-lock seams won't cause chafing even after hours on the road

Nice to show off a jersey

I'm 5'11", 160 and the medium fits well. It does a great job of blocking the wind on cool mornings in the 50-65 degree range. When it's sunny and 70, it starts to get a little too warm and the only option is to take it off, which I've avoided so far but have been tempted. A vest is more practical but I still think this is a nice piece to have, especially if you want to show off a jersey and not cover it up with a vest.

Good fit, great windstopper

XXL fits great on my clydesdale frame (6'5" and 220). The mesh back is comfortable enough that I almost forget it's on under my jersey. Perfect addition for the cold summer mornings in the fog above the SF Bay. It kept me plenty warm on fast, cold, 7-mile descents. Added bonus, even when the day heats up and I'm on the flats or climbing, this has never overheated me and I've never had to stop and remove it.

It is worth noting that this isn't really a "base layer" in the traditional sense as only the front panel is windstopper fabric; the remainder of the garment is well-ventilated mesh. Its only function is to keep you from needing to stuff a newspaper in your jersey, which is cool since there aren't any spectators on my rides.

I also have a couple of pairs of the Gore Ozon bib shorts and I'm a fan of Gore's quality & fit. This product is no different; well-made and comfortable.

I only gave 4 stars because when it's *really* cold, I wish I'd bought the SS version instead of the sleeveless. My shoulders freeze!
