Description

Instant weather shield.

Whenever nasty weather pops up, pull the Gore Bike Wear Alp-X AS Light Jacket out of your pack for dedicated coverage. Completely windproof and breathable, the WindStopper Alp-X sheds the elements, while it also packs into its own stow pocket for convenient carrying.

Gore Bike Wear's Alp-X AS Light Jacket is made from Gore's patented WindStopper fabric. As its name implies, Windstopper provides an absolute level of protection against the wind, defining itself as utterly windproof. However, what you don't take away from the title is that this material is also water-resistant. Now, it's worth noting that Gore's designation of 'water-resistant' is superior to other manufacturers' insistence of 'waterproof.' This combination of attributes falls inline with what Gore calls its Outfit System. Within this system, there are three layers of apparel with three specific functions. The first layer is for moisture management, the second layer controls thermo-regulation, and the third layer, such as this jacket, provides weather protection. Accordingly, Windstopper will repel water, shed snow, and block out any wind, all while remaining highly breathable.

And although the Alp-X is made for mountainous touring, you're going to have to ride home at some point. Which is why Gore included reflective piping and accents throughout the jacket. Additionally, Gore included a full-length front zipper with an under-flap that eliminates wind from sneaking through. You'll also find that a zip-port has been added in order to mitigate irritation against the skin.

The Alp-X AS Light Jacket has pre-shaped elbows and an ergonomically shaped collar for a natural feel. Gore even gave the Alp-X abrasion-resistant prints on the shoulders in order to resist wear from backpacks. However, aside from the aforementioned, our favorite feature of the jacket is its light overall weight. At around a mere 110 grams, the jacket provides protection from the elements without heating you up, making it ideal for spring and summer rides. Additionally, this attribute makes the Alp-X's easy to pack into a jersey pocket, which is made even simpler by the included stow pocket.

The Gore Bike Wear Alp-X AS Light Jacket is available in five sizes from Small to XX-Large and in the colors Black/graphite grey, Vibrant Orange/black, and Red/black.

Lightweight, but too light on features

  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

I own several pieces of Gore Bike Wear and love the material. The Windstopper jackets are very breathable and keep you warm, but most of them have a mesh lining and some additional features that make it hard to just stuff it into a jersey pocket. I have a Gore Tex Paclite shell, which is great for storing it away, but doesn't breath as lightly as the Windstopper materials. Naturally, I was excited when I saw this new jacket which seemed to fit the bill, also in the sense that the Backcountry price was awesome. Regretably, I will send the jacket back. As usualy with the Gore Bike Wear slim fit, I ordered XL which fits me reasonably well. Unfortunately, the sleeves are a little wide and contrary other GBW jackets, this one doesn't have loops to tighten the sleeves. As a result, wind enters, which contradicts the whole point of a Windstopper jacket. Also, don't expect this jacket to be warm. It's super-thin, so unfortunately, it doesn't have much of the comfort as oher GBW jackets. I have also tried to Xenon 2.0 jacket, which has nicer sleeves, but runs even tighter. The compromise is the Oxygen GT AS Jacket, which is light, has nice sleeves, but is again of Gore Tex material that doesn't breathe as well. Oh well, I guess I will still be waiting that Gore will eventually make a perfect jacket that offers the perfect balance of light, windproof, breathable and good fit.
