Item # GOP004M

While the Silver Edition of the excellent new GoPro Hero4 camera now includes a redesigned, swipe-able touchscreen for both viewing and controlling what you capture, other GoPro cameras do not, which is why GoPro developed the LCD Touch BacPac. Attachable to the Hero3, Hero3+, and new Hero4 cameras, the LCD enables shot-framing, control over playback and camera settings, and it has a built-in speaker with a volume knob and headphone jack so you can hear what the camera has captured, too. The box also includes the Touch, Standard, and Skeleton BacPac doors, mounting hardware, and a protective case. The attachment of the LCD Touch BacPac does not impede the camera's compatibility with your standard camera housing.

Suddenly I see

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

Clips in easily, displays a high-quality image, and helps me see the wide range my GoPro can record. Need I say more?

Uses: Personal videos, skateboarding, and beautiful shots to add to a compilation.

Nice, but unnecessary.

This is a nice feature to have, but it's not nice enough for me to justify the steep price and the demand on battery life. My batteries last about half as long when I use the screen and I find that most of the time when I'm using my Gopro, I actually don't look at the screen.

Also, you have to use a different housing back than originally comes with the camera. This is no problem unless you've got an attachment accessory that will not function as well with an extra piece on the GoPro.

Still On The Fence

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

This is a handy bit of gear, but I am not really sure it's necessary. Cons: Draws a lot of battery if left on (first time I was not sure how to turn it off while still filming) and it came with only the smaller housing backs--not great if you have a GoPro 3 like I do. It's advertised as working with the GP3, but you have to buy additional housing backs to make that happen. The day before going on a trip, that can really be a bummer. Okay, to be honest I was incensed and called GP and Backcountry to complain.

Pros: as you might expect, it's handy to be able to see your vids and delete the bad ones to save memory or share clips with friends (and realize what you may have missed, so you can go back and capture that once-in-a-lifetime shot). On my trip to Nepal last fall it would have been super handy (rats! didn't have it then.).

I got it for my wife as a way to raise her comfort level with the camera and she'll use it if she wants, but if I am going to add extra bulk to my camera, it'll be for the battery bacpac instead. I assume once she is more familiar with the camera, she won't feel a need to see everything right away.

It does what it's supposed to, just not really right for me.
