Item # GIR007T

Buckle up.

Giro's Xar Helmet represents the best blend of value, protection, and ventilation for a mountain bike helmet. It's a bit more substantial than, say, the road-specific Atmos II, but that's because its job is different. It's made to provide more coverage to the sides and back of your head while also resisting the every, branch-bumping nature of trail riding. A lightweight, barely-there road helmet is designed to protect against a single, serious impact — like an airbag. The Xar is more like the constant support of a seatbelt.

The Xar begins life as a roll cage made from DuPont Nylon, which provides a structural skeleton for the impact-absorbing EPS foam body. This keeps the helmet from shattering under impact. The In-Mold construction process fuses the EPS layer to the outer, polycarbonate one to reinforce the helmet — especially the spots around the vents and ribs. It makes them lighter, more durable, and better ventilated than helmets with shells that are glued to the liner.

The Xar's 17 Wind Tunnel vents and internal channeling shuttle air across your head while pulling heat up, up, and away. The P.O.V. visor increases comfort in a different way, by deflecting the sun, rain, and the odd twig or errant pebble kicked up by your riding buddies. The visor's internal clutch system allows for 15 degrees of vertical adjustment achieved by a very precise and technical quick whack of the hand. Its removal is just as easy and tool-free. The Roc Loc 5 fit system uses a ratcheting dial to adjust the helmet's fit.

Helmet runs large

  • Familiarity: I returned this product before using it

Great helmet however the size runs a bit large. I have a 55cm sized head and the medium was just a tad bit too large after getiing a haircut. Returning it for a small size instead and recommend going down a size when ordering.

Won't buy another one

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I'm on my second Xar because they are very comfortable, well-ventilated, provide good coverage, and look good. It has some significant flaws, however, that will probably keep me from ordering another one.

They may be just a problem for me, but here they are:
It doesn't hold sweat well at all. The padded liner has a break in it along the forehead, and combined with the thin padding, creates a river of sweat that runs straight down my forehead into my sunglasses. Of all the helmets I've had, the Xar is the worst for this.

As other reviewers has mentioned, the Roc-loc retention system is fragile. Mine broke way too early in its life, and I'm not going to spend $40 to replace it. I'd rather put that money towards a new helmet.

The Troy Lee A1 is heavier (I feel like I'm wearing an Igloo), but feels like (subjective, I know) it would provide more protection in a crash and holds sweat better. The Catlike Leaf is my sleeper pick; light. well ventilated, super comfy, and holds sweat well.

All told, if it works for you, go for it, but I won't be getting another one.

On the Matte Lime/Mountain Division helmet, are the straps lime green or black?

Howdy!

Looks like this will have gray straps that match the gray "X" on the back of the helmet. Check out this shot of it as well!

Visors are in

  • Fit: True to size
  • Size Bought: Medium

Don’t let your cross country buddies tell you visors are lame, the Xar is anything but. The Xar has great protection on the sides of the helmet and back, which was the major selling point for me on this lid. Ventilation is solid and the Roc Loc is great for easy adjustment. I have been riding with this helmet for 2 years and can’t complain about one thing.

Good, but not perfect

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

Excellent fit. Great color. Normal weight; not exceptionally light or heavy. Adequately air vented.

Cons: Sun visor is just too short too have any effect. Looks nice, but not functional at all if you ride in the sun.

Solid Helmet

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

Great low profile helmet that doesn't make my head look bigger than it already is! I've been wearing it all summer and I hardly notice that I'm wearing it when I ride. Easy to adjust and well ventilated.

Cooler head prevail

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

A well ventilated helmet is essential for desert riding and out here in Utah we have plenty of that. I have found this helmet to be one of the better ventilated while maintaining a secure and snug fit. The Roc Loc grips my occipatal protuberences and feels bomb proof. All internal pads are replaceable, so when you sweat it out, you can get new ones. Remember, most manufacturers recommend you replace your helmet every 4 years or sooner. Impacts should be replaced immediately.

Great Fit and Ventilation

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I recently purchased another Giro Xar after using my previous Xar for about four years.

I think one of the best features of the Xar is its ventilation. It has kept me very comfortable, even on hot Southern California summer days.

The fit is also dialed. I have a pretty large head and the Large sizes fits very well with no pressure points. I tried on a lot of different helmets before purchasing my latest Xar and I have to say that it fits true to size.

The only minor issue I have is that the plastic on the roc-loc dial separates (same issue described by the previous reviewer).

However, this has not prevented me from using the helmet and has not interfered with it's functionality.

Overall, a great helmet for Trail and All-Mountain riding.

It's ok.

Fits great, comfortable too. HOWEVER, the padding will peel and the roc loc plastic will break. Giro calls this normal wear and tear. I've owned my Xar for less than a year and now I have the option to spend $40 on replacement parts. That said, I guess I can't get a helmet this good for $40.
