Giro's unconventional aerodynamic helmets and Empire shoes are making a lot of noise at the high-end, "performance" pole of the cycling spectrum, but the California manufacturer's cycling apparel tends to privilege functionality and timeless, simple construction over formal experimentation. The Softshell Jacket is a great example of this. Its aesthetic and its form both strive for a clamor-free ride, keeping noisy graphics and noisy flapping out of the equation.

The Softshell Jacket does have some features worth making noise about, though — not least of all being the wind and water resistance. The first step to staying warm in winter may be insulation, but that quickly proves inadequate once the knife-like winds and frigid moisture come into play. Despite this elemental protection, the jacket is still breathable. This means that your microclimate won't develop sauna-syndrome during a hard effort and then devolve into cold, clammy dampness for the rest of your ride.

Giro's Stowback gear pocket is also noise-worthy. Stowback comprises three rear pockets that are actually housed inside of the jacket. Vertically-oriented zippers on either side of the bank of pockets let you reach in from the sides for quick access, though for full access, you'll have to take the vest off. The key benefit of Stowback is that, when you're not on the bike, you're not constantly advertising the fact that you're a cyclist — even if you're still carrying a full complement of cycling-related cargo.

The jacket is finished off with two hidden vents at the collarbone sleeve seams and a full-length front zipper, all of which will come in handy if you start to overheat. The raglan sleeve cut also means the jacket accommodates a stretched-out cycling posture while maintaining adequate coverage.
