Description

Bar-hopping with Hampsten.

The Giro Reverb Helmet may look as though it just fell out of a faded 1991 Tour de France poster, but if you look closer, you'll find modern re-tooling, and subtle homage to the famed helmet that put a then little-known Giro Sport Design on the map. Gone are the outdated standards of yesteryear, replaced with a low-profile, lightweight, impact-resistant in-mold shell, and Giro's excellent self-adjusting Auto Loc fit system. The peloton may not have been able to reel in Indurain by the 22nd stage, but you should have little trouble cruising the city to reel in your next brew.

Good helmet

  • Gender: Male
  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

This helmet (like almost all helmets produced to be sold in the USA) is CPSC certified meaning you can use it in USA cycling races.

(FYI some euro helmets have a different certification, and there has been debate over whether the Euro certification satisfied USA cycling officials, I think there was a recent rule change over this)

I got the high viz color which is great to help you stand out on a busy road. Its the correct color for high-viz. Its not just yellow, but highlighter yellow which really stands out.

I think the fit is excellent (aka perfect) and does not fit high (though my girlfriend always says I have an oddly shaped head, she's wrong).

I wear a L in Bell and also L for this helmet.

Ventilation is also solid not quite as good as my bell sweep r, but more then good enough.

One issue is that there are no vents where you can place your sunglasses. You'll have to store them on your jersey somewhere.

Also this helmet does not have a "ratchet" or clicking adjustment system on the back to dial in the fit. It uses a stretchy fabric instead. That design it works very well and keeps the helmet snug but not too snug.

The price is right too, no need to spend 3x on something fancier. Cool, comfortable helmet that would not look out of place in a race.

Okay for urban cycling

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

The reverb is a lot like communism; it looks great on paper but never works out in person. The colors it comes in are rad, but the fit is so funky. despite the small adjustment tabs on the inside of the helmet, and the back elastic strap, it's just a weird fit and sits pretty high on your head (I've had several friends try my helmet on and it looks the same on everyone). However, I will say it does fit well with a helmet liner under it, in the dead of a Utah winter. If you wanting something rad and 'urban' looking, get a Bern helmet.

Is this helmet good to use in a road race?

Responded on

Sure, any helmet would be good. Pretty sure you only have to wear a helmet. Shouldn't matter the style. I think you have to get pretty serious in racing for aerodynamics to be a legitimate concern. Besides, this is what helmets used to look like, the helmets that pro racers wore(sometimes).

Vintage look, light weight, great fit.

Got the helmet in the mail today, I'm 7 1/8 hat size or 22 3/4 inches approximate. I got the medium size which is true to size. This helmet reminds me of a older style giro helmet, might have been called the hammer head? this helmet doesn't appear bulky and has adjustable fit with removable inserts. I appreciate the rear elastic support most helping keep the helmet on even when in a accident. I am also pleased to write I was able to adjust the fit in just a few minuets and with a decent semi snug fit. but not resticting. After a long ride any annoyance will become greater. Visor is removable. the color is just as picture, matte gray, with rear reflectors looking nice, not cheesy. if you prefer a not so bulky vintage looking, light weight good looking helmet. This might be the one for you.
