Find your way.

The Giro Men's Privateer R Shoe breaks on the scene as a refreshing update to the original Privateer, preserving all the qualities riders loved in the classic hardworking trail shoe and updating the outsole to co-molded nylon and rubber for an impeccable mix of comfort, stiffness, and grip. Minor updates aside, the Privateer R still cuts a streamlined profile to add a touch of class to any day on the trail.

The Privateer R's closure system consists of a ratcheting buckle at the top and two hook-and-loop straps across the midfoot and toes that are easily adjustable on the fly for a secure, comfortable fit. The upper is made of soft, breathable microfiber and features perforations for added cooling and a sleek, minimalist profile.

Giro incorporates a co-molded nylon and rubber outsole with grippy, high-traction lugs for confident foot placement on and off the bike. Toe box reinforcement increases the Privateer R's lifespan, with a rubber toe guard to protect your piggies when the going gets rough. The outsole's tread pattern also accommodates flat pedal riding while providing debris clearance for two-bolt clipless pedals, so they'll travel with you between disciplines.

  • Grippy trail shoe for singletrack adventures and racing
  • Co-molded nylon sole optimizes pedaling efficiency
  • High-traction rubber lugs provide aggressive grip
  • Microfiber upper is pleasantly supple and breathable
  • Dual-strap lower with micro-adjustable buckle at upper
  • Aegis antimicrobial promotes freshness after sweaty rides
  • Giro's sleek styling gets a rugged makeover for the trail

bulletproof and comfortable

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit: Runs small
  • Size Bought: 45.5

bought these for daily use commuting and 20+mi rides on cross bike
have held up great even with 4 season use and a lot of washing & exposure to salt & grime
nylon sole makes for comfortable running & walking + good traction

Great mtb shoes, but run small.

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: Runs small
  • Size Bought: 44

These shoes are a great value and definitely do the job. However, make sure that you order up a full size as they run very small. I'm a men's size 9.5 normally and had to get a size 44.

Solid Shoes

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: Runs small

These shoes are solid all around. The soles have a surprising amount of grip, even when riding on pedals unclipped. The straps and buckle work together very well to provide a secure fit. The uppers vent well and look durable enough to hold up season after season. They do run a little small.

Solid retention and excellent grip.

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: True to size
  • Size Bought: Size 45 - (normally size 11)

These are undoubtedly the best cycling shoes I've owned for trail riding, thanks to their super comfortable fit, solid retention system, and extremely grippy sole. Giro redesigned their trail shoes with a stickier rubber compound that delivers great traction on the trail, especially if you're walking your bike over techy sections or dismounting for a bathroom break.

The sole is superbly stiff for nylon, obviously not like a full carbon version. For enthusiast-level trail riding it's pretty much perfect, unless you're seeking to maximize every watt of available power.

One thing I do need to note, the first pair I bought became stuck around my ankle, with the buckled strap jamming up. I'm not sure if it was my fault (seemed like a design fault from Giro), but I almost had to cut the shoe off to remove it. Luckily, I was able to slip the jammed shoe off (it was stuck in the tightest possible position) and order a new pair. My second pair is free of any buckle problems, so I wouldn't worry about the aforementioned issue. Just wanted to give my honest impressions and experience with the shoes. Otherwise, I'll probably ride 'em until they're completely shredded from abuse.

Great Shoes, Backcountry.com even better

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

Love the shoes. They do fit a little small, maybe 1/2 a size. Plenty stiff.

They came with 1 buckle with a little deformity that caused the ratchet to "skip" when tightening. Called Giro and they said the wouldn't have the N-1 buckle for over 4 months. They wanted me to pay for shipping and have a comparable item in exchange. Yeah... no thanks, especially when I could just buy the replacement for a few dollars over the price of shipping elsewhere.

Called Backcountry.com and in under 5 minutes they are shipping a replacement buckle and I'll get old one back to them once I get the new one. Thanks Backcountry!

I forget I'm wearing them

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: Runs small
  • Size Bought: 11US/45EU

The first thing I notice when I put my Privateers on is...well, nothing. That's the beauty of these shoes. They fit so perfectly I'm never reminded I'm wearing them. No tight spots, hot spots, loose spots, nothing. I've worn them through 1 season of 'cross so far and the performed perfectly. They're also quite comfy to run in and hop over barriers with. I'd buy them again and again.

I ordered a US size 11 since that's the normal sneaker size I wear. I was a little nervous because cycling shoes I've bought in the past tend to run a size small. My Specialized road shoes are 12.5! But the Privateers are actually pretty close if not a hair small. If they were any smaller, they'd be uncomfortable, but as they are, perfect, but I also don't mind a slightly snug fit as my feet aren't growing anymore.

Nice pair, but runs small

  • Familiarity: I returned this product before using it
  • Fit: Runs small

This is a really nice pair of good-looking shoes. The material is really durable, but I wasn't able to use it because the shoes run a little smaller than expected.
