Simply functional.

While the majority of Giro's New Road cycling apparel isn't designed specifically for cycling so much as it is for a lifestyle that involves cycling, we do feel that the New Road Ride Bib Shorts address a missing link between the New Road philosophy and many of Giro's other cycling products. There's a certain element of minimalist style to kit like the Aspect helmet and certain colors of the Empire ACC shoes that had no corresponding match at either the "performance" or the "casual" poles of the cycling shorts spectrum, but the Ride Bib Shorts fills that niche.

The Ride Bibs are made from Lycra produced by the Italian knit experts Miti. It's a blend of nylon and elastane that wicks moisture and provides a compressive, supportive stretch to alleviate the gradual accumulation of muscle fatigue caused by road vibration. If this were any other pair of bib shorts, we'd be inclined to call it a "performance" material, but we fear that would be an injustice to the shorts' unpretentious styling. So we'll just call it functional and move on.

Bibs and compressive leg bands have become the standard elements for securing cycling shorts' fit, and the Rides certainly don't disappoint. The bibs are made from a highly breathable and unrestrictive mesh material, and you might assume their inclusion given that they're mentioned in the bib shorts' name.

The compressive leg bands, on the other hand, are not a guarantee in shorts these days, and we're glad to see Giro taking advantage of this new trend as opposed to the pinching, unpleasant elastic cuffs that remain oddly prevalent in the industry. Rather than bite into your skin for purchase, the leg bands distribute pressure across a wide area, like snowshoes, to maintain fit without sacrificing comfort. The same holds true for the CyTech-designed chamois, which situates high-density foam padding to correspond with your sit bones, keeping pressure where you want it while using channels to relieve the areas you'd rather protect.

The three rear pockets at the lower back are a detail where the Giro's design team's penchant for rethinking long-established elements of cycling kit. These pockets triple the usual cargo space we have in the saddle, but our favorite use of them is with a music player. An extra loop of material on the left bib strap helps corral earphone cords, so you can run them under your jersey and out of the way. Finally, we'd be remiss if we didn't not that these shorts are made in California.
