Description

Ride cooler, ride faster, ride safer. The Giro Ionos Helmet helps you do all three.

Not one to rest on their laurels, Giro brings the Ionos Helmet into the line for 2008, with 21 massive vents, gorgeous (and functional) exposed composite reinforcement, and a 15% increase in cooling efficiency over the former-flagship Atmos. Metaphorically speaking, the Ionos is the invisible molecule perched on road cycling technology's razor edge. More to the point, it's the coolest, most advanced helmet Giro has conceived to date.

Light Weight, Good Fit

I have trained and raced in the Ionos helmet since May of 08, and continue to use it. The Giro Ionos helmet is one of the coolest best fitting helmets I have worn. The 21 vents have really come in handy in the heat of summer when you wish you had a fan on your face. The padding inside, X-Static, is precisely placed to provide comfort from the shell and is removable so you can wash the stench out. The adjustment in the back is easy to use, even while riding you can make micro. adjustments easily. Another thing I like is the fact that the helmet weighs in at a mere 309 g, I wear a medium. I use the helmet for the Road as well as on my MTB. Your head is worth the price. Ride On.

Uncomfortable Helmet

This helmet was not designed for my shaped head .... similar to a torture device.

Giro Ionos Helmet

Light, well ventilated and stylish. Everything an h-core Roadie could want, eh. I have been riding this helmet for the last year or so and have been thoroughly pleased. I wear it on my MTB, my cross bike and as a road helmet. It might be a little light duty as a MTB helmet but it gets the job done. It is like I am wearing nothing at all.

SWeet Helmet

This helmet actually made my head cold the first time I wore it the vents really do the job well! Haven't crashed with it so I can't testify for it intended use. I got mine using credit card points so price wasn't an issue. Shop for a deal online 230 is really a lot for a helmet even a nice one like this.

great

helmets aren't all that exciting but this does the job, with plenty of vents, easy adjustment and super lightweight. comes with a great little liner you can insert for those colder days when you don't really want the wind freezing your head.

Cool, Comfortable, Flashy/Classy

Rode in the Atmos before this. When the Ionos first came out I tried it on and it looked huge on my head. But as I wore my Atmos more and more started noticing the two pressure points on my forehead more and more so decided to give the Ionos a try. No pressure points, tons of ventilation, the look grew on me too. Great Helmet! It rocks glasses really well, no slipping out of the vents when off your face. Plus it came with a really great winter pad to keep your head warm without having to wear a hat, great fall and spring time alternative.

Giro Ionos

Nice helmet, really like it. Looks kool, feels kool. Light, comfy, extra pads to for when they wear out.

For those of you that used to wear older Giro top end models, the large is a little smaller than it used to be, so if you're on the obderline to an extra large, consider that. My hat is a little tight under the helmet now...

Con: the straps don't come out now, so they can't be taken off and washed separately...something I would do once a year or so to clean them up, since the ride rinse is only marginally effective.

Haven't banged it on the ground fully loaded yet, so I can't say how well it works as cranial protection...:)

4 stars since there were two things I didn't like about it...

Ok but needs design review

The helmet fits well but it could use a little more padding. The pads seem a little thin and I sometimes feel the Velcro through them. Also the Velcro seems to be in awkward places to hold pads in place like on the sides of the rear adjustment piece. The rear adjustment tabs after about 6 months of use seem to pop out every once in a while when I push them together. The attachment points for the rear adjustment piece after about 6-8 months seem to have given away and now it pops out rendering that part of the helmet useless.

Light & Cool

I bought this helmet after reading so many rave reviews about the comfort and cooling power of this skull cap. I will say that it is quite comfortable. The build of the helmet is very nice and the placement and construction of the pads is a real improvement over previous Giro designs. They are shaped better, stand up to use and washings much better than previous designs, and if they really thwart bacteria and odors and all, that's awesome. The only reason I drop a star on this review is that I really thought the helmet would be cooler. It is definitely cool and does a good venting job, but the area right where it makes contact at the forehead gets kind of warm when the mercury rises. Maybe I'm being too critical, and I'd rather have protection and overall helmet strength there than a cool forehead, but if they can maintain structural integrity and put some vents there under the lip and onto the forehead, that would do the trick.

Helmet crash tested within 2 weeks

After many years of cycling, I finally decided to step up to a top of the line helmet. Realcyclist.com handled the purchase flawlessly. But, little did I know that less than two weeks later I would be involved in my first ever serious bike crash. Tossed from the bike at 20mph, tumbled until my shoulder dug into the ground like a farmer's plow, slamming my head into rocky ground. Helmet absorbed the violent impact exactly like it is supposed to, cracking the styrofoam in numerous places. End result was a grade 3 separated shoulder, bruised ribs, lacerations, and no head injury whatsoever. I immediately ordered an identical replacement so it will be on hand when I can return to the bike. Great helmet, very stylish, and very safe!

I'm considering a new purchase, but I've...

I'm considering a new purchase, but I've lost confidence in Giro because of the adjuster in the rear. I can push the two "tabs" together to snug the fit, but as soon as I raise my head (as would be the cyclist's position), the adjusters release and the helmet loosens. I find myself reaching back and re-tightening constantly during my rides. I know the Pnuemo is a bit dated, but I'm disappointed to see the same fit system on Giro's current helmets. Main question: has anyone else had this same complaint, and has Giro acknowledged and addressed it?

Responded on

I had the old Pnuemo helmet & now have the Ionos. I have not experienced the "loosen" that you are experiencing. If you don't want to run GIRO, I would check out the other helmet brands offered. LAS fit system is pretty trick.

You have a defective helmet! I have had 2 pnuemo's (one died in a crash), and neither have had a any problems.

Perfect Fit/Easy Adjustment

Just picked up the 2009 Ionos in the Red/Black color scheme. This helmet provides a snug fit with really good ventilation. The fit is perfect and does not have any pressure points. This is great for long and frequent rides, a must if you're getting serious about cycling. Unfortunately I lost my balance at a light and fell back onto my head and dented a VERY small portion of the helmet "fins" in the back. Barely noticeable... This is a TOUGH helmet too!

Nice one! And I like the black

Not sure. As per usual fits very well, head gripper thing works without issue. . . . .although I'm not sure if I am getting smaller? The helmet seems bigger on my head? Anyway, absolutely no issues, it fits great and I reckon it looks pretty good. What else do ya want?

Awesome noggin' protector

This helmet is nothing short of amazing. First of all, it looks very cool, something we all look for in a helmet if we are serious riders. I always have the problem of "mushroom head" when wearing a helmet. Although this helmet still looks like mushroom head on me, it is the least of any helmet I have ever worn. Secondly, it keeps your head cool. I know everyone else is saying this, and it turns out they are right! The faster you go, the cooler the air on your scalp. My hold Giro helmet, I could literally squeeze the front of the helmet on to my forehead and sweat would pour out. This helmet won't allow that. You don't even hear any wind/draft around your helmet. After a long ride, you'll forget you are even wearing it. I don't know how well it protects your noggin', but I'd expect it to be as good, if not better than the next. Lastly...did I mention this helmet is dope? Spend the cash on this baby...you will not be disappointed.
