Their powers combined.

Giro's Code VR70 Shoes are a redesign of the previous Code shoes that benefits from the respective expertise of three different manufacturers. First is Giro, whose ergonomic fit and use-inspired design have become almost as recognized as the simple elegance of its style. The other two are Easton, an industry leader in carbon fiber technology, and Vibram, an Italian giant in rubber outsoles. The result is not only lighter than the previous Code, but it's also got a cleaner look that you'll love to get dirty.

The Code VR70's closure system remains relatively unchanged, including a return of the middle, hook-and-loop strap that goes across the mid-foot and takes pride of place over the ratcheting buckle on the top strap. The middle strap essentially turns the entire panel of inner fabric into an extension of itself, eliminating pressure on the metatarsal bones by pulling equally from a large swath of fabric on the inside of the foot. As usual, the bottom strap is stuck hanging out with the toes, so the firm fit at the top of the shoe doesn't have to extend to the toe box.

The upper is made of Giro's proprietary Evofiber, which is exceptionally lightweight and highly breathable, featuring perforations for added cooling. This contributes not only to the sleek, minimalist profile, but it also reduces weight. The Evofiber is reinforced with high-frequency welded polyurethane in areas where your foot is likely to bash rocks or get bashed. The polyurethane makes the upper feel a bit stiffer than it would if it were 100% Evofiber, but as you ride, the poly will soften a bit and conform to your foot.

The sole is the main difference between the Code VR70 and the previous Code model, with the present iteration incorporating an Easton EC70 sole instead of EC90. The result is an equally efficient ride with a slight weight increase in the sole; however, this is remedied with lighter construction throughout the rest of the shoe for an ultimate claimed weight loss of 20 grams (size 42.5).

The new inclusion of a Vibram Mont outsole may have something to do with this. Vibram's Mont comprises a pair of complementary compounds, IdroGrip and Megagrip, which respectively lean toward grip and durability for the right qualities in the right parts of the shoe. The outsole's tread pattern also accommodates flat pedal riding while providing debris clearance for two-bolt clipless pedals, so they'll travel with you between disciplines.
