Description

Keep your sphere intact.

How much do we love the Giro Atmos Helmet? So much that it's been a permanent fixture in our cycling closets since it first appeared on the scene. Sure, we've flirted with some new, good-looking lids, but we've always come back to our true love, the Atmos.

The Atmos was the first helmet that ever looked amazing, while also saving our lives. It had tons of air channels, it was lightweight, and it was seriously durable -- this was still back when most helmets looked awful and weighed heavily on the head. And today, it still looks so cool, and works so well, that it's the most popular helmet that we've ever sold. The Atmos was so groundbreaking because it was the first helmet that made use of Giro's In-Mold Composite reinforcement. Through the use of this construction process, the outer shell has been permanently fused to the impact-absorbing, EPS foam liner. This process enhances the effectiveness of both parts. In fact, the fusion process actually reinforces the formerly vulnerable spots around the vents and ribs. It results in a lighter, more durable, and better-ventilated helmet. The Roll Cage internal reinforcement gives the added protection that you'll be glad to have next time someone takes you down in the final corner of a criterium.

The amazing comfort that the Atmos offers has been one of the main reasons for its longevity. Giro has taken over 20 years of helmet design to establish its proprietary, Super Fit Engineering. This means that Giro has created the helmet in three sizes based on 'human scale factors' data that have amassed throughout its history of handcrafting helmets. The helmets are intended to fit snugly and securely, while still accommodating the vast majority of head sizes.

Giro's development of its Roc Loc 5 Fit System makes those micro-adjustments possible. With the Roc Loc system, you can custom tune the fit tension as well as the fore-aft tilt of the helmet in seconds with one hand. Though other helmet manufacturers have similar adjustability options, none of them even come close to the weight savings that the Roc Loc system offers: it's almost 40% lighter than comparable systems.

Keeping your head cool during even the hottest, most critical road races is something that Giro has focused a great deal of attention on. Accordingly, its helmets are developed with a proprietary Wind Tunnel Ventilation System. Basically, it's an elaborate design that combines 26 vents in the shell with exhaust channels within the belly of the helmet leading to the rear. The effect is that the fresh, cool air from the front is strategically channeled around the head to help evaporate the sweat, then out the rear exhaust openings. It's a natural cooling system that you'll appreciate every ride.

The Giro Atmos Helmet is available in the sizes Small, Medium, and Large and in the colors Highlight Yellow/black, Matte Black/blue MC Hesheer, Matte Black/white, Matte Titantium, Matte White/silver, and Red/black. It also comes equipped with Giro's X-Static padding.

saved my bacon

I use the atmos for mtn biking and on the road. I recently crashed while coming down a mtn road. a 4 wheeler was coming up on the wrong side of the road on a corner. I had to evade a head on and hit some loose gravel, went down hard. the helmet did it's job, it cracked so my skull was saved. some good road rash was the only pain full part. no lOC from hitting my head. I'm ordering another today.

Protect that pretty head of yours!

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

Great, lightweight helmet. Keeps your head cool. Also looks great. I was involved with in bike/car accident and my helmet held up in a high speed impact. I ended up getting a new helmet in case their were defects from the crash. My pads started wearing out after a year of use, which in turn made it uncomfortable to wear. There are replacement pads that you can purchase to replace them.

Too wide for my head

  • Familiarity: I returned this product before using it

I tried it, but the large was definitely too large and the medium was just a little too wide to be comfortable. I'm picky about hats/helmets though. It was nice and light, looked good, seemed like good quality. I'll give it four stars but it just didn't fit perfect.

Light weight

  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

This helmet is light weight and very breathable. Fits great and looks awesome too. This will be great for when the temps get hotter. Excited to use it!

Loving this helmet.

  • Familiarity: I gave it as a gift, but have feedback to share

I use this helmet for XC trail and road riding. I find it to be the perfect level of versatility for both. It's a nice snug fit, is super light and strong. Plenty of ventilation for the summer time and has just enough room a headband or a lycra hat in the winter.

I tried the newer high end AEON helmet but prefer the slightly more compact fit and feel of the Atmos.

Loving this helmet.

What does this helmet weigh?

Responded on

Giro has a listed weight of 280 grams with no size indicated, but reviews on other sites have come in with weights of 256 for a size medium. The more weight conscious helmet in Giro's line is going to be the Aeon helmet.

The classic

Giro is a really cool company. Based in Santa Cruz CA, they design some of the best high-end helmets in our sport (atmos, aeon, air attack). Excellent gloves and aero covers too.

I purchased my first Giro "Atmos" helmet over 10 years ago. It was one of the first modern, really good looking, highly-vented, in-mold composite/Kevlar reinforced bike helmets.

Pros: Very, very well ventilated. Light weight. Strong. X-static (silver fiber) pads naturally inhibit sweat odor. Awesome looks. This is a -great- Summer helmet. The classic for a reason.

Cons: none

Note: The reviews below are correct. Make sure any helmet fits your head shape (and size) correctly. This is very important and true with any company's bike helmet.

love it

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I've owned 2 Atmos helmets (first one did it's job and protected me during a severe crash). Atmos fits my 59cm head perfectly and has room to expand when wearing winter head coverings. Top it off with excellent support from Giro when the pads broke down prematurely and this one is a winner.

Airy odd shaped

  • Gender: Male
  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

Overall, this is a well constructed safe helmet. The sizing And shape of giro helmets is a little odd for non egg head people. If you size up its a bit oversized but you still get safe coverage.
I've had two falls with this and it's held up very well.

Light Protection

  • Gender: Male
  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

When i started road riding, I found out real quick that a lighter, more ventilated helmet made for an easier ride temperature wise. So, I started out with the Giro Atmos Helmet and was glad I did. The 26 vents almost keep my head too cool and the roc-loc 5 keeps the Atmos snug on top of my head after a bit of adjusting.
Sizing can get a little tough if you are right at the 55cm (common) head size. I went with a medium and had to play with the adjustments a bit, but was able to get a snug fit.

Nice and light

This helmet is lightweight and comfortable... almost makes it feel like you're not even wearing it. The design keeps your head cool and protected. Simple but effective.

Quality Helmet

I've owned at Atmos for the last year, I love the fit, ventilation, and weight.

When it came time to shop for a lid for the lady, the Atmos was my first suggestion. After trying on a bunch of models and brands, she loved the fit of the Atmos the best. The retention system can accommodate a pony tail fairly easily; an important feature as she has long hair. The retention adjustment also makes for a very secure fit.

We got her the matte titanium colorway, we both love the look and I'm a little jealous that hers looks better than my standard black one.
